I think Backlund has a higher ceiling than 3C.
Stajan is a 3C you're right, but I don't see him being here after this season, hopefully by the trade deadline.
Knight fills a gap though, big time.
Edit:
Next year it's shaping up like:
1. Backlund
2. Stajan
3. Knight
4. Reinhart

Clarkson = Kulemin....as in one 30 goal year......lets not overrate this guy. He is not what we need, which is 4 new defensemen. - Timmy_Bee
Would have agreed if he didn't score 15 in this shortened season. Kulemin has been at 7 for a couple of seasons now.
And I'm with you on the defense thinking we need at least 3. But I still feel a quality top 6 who can play a physical game is most missed in this lineup. |

I think with Rielly, Percy, Finn and Blacker in the pipeline we are covered on defense in the future. If 2 of them make it we will be in good shape.
But we need a first line centre with some size. Kadri is not the answer, or Bozak or Grabo or anyone in the system.
Colborne might be a 3rd liner, 2nd liner if we are lucky so I think the focus has to be in acquiring the guy we can count on for a number of years to be "the guy"
It's going to cost a ton but we have to do it. |

like kulemin or not, he's not going to be worth the 5-6 mil he'll draw on the open market. |

So does anyone get the feeling franson won't be resigned? Josi signed for 4 million, now Voynov signs for basically 4.2 million. Franson put up better numbers then them in the regular season and had 6 points in 7 games in the playoffs. Do we hold out for someone to send him an offer sheet of 4 million and just part ways? Do we trade him to an interested team for a prospect who could step in now? I just can't see Nonis offering Franson 4 mil+ especially since he won't budge on the Bozak negotiations. |

yeah i do for sure to. he's not a good clarkson comparable. clarkson has colby armstrong 2.0 written all over him.
when it comes to guys like kulemin, i hear your points aren't everything theory. when it comes to the top six, (frank) points doesn't apply. |

in his last two seasons before coming to toronto, colby had 22 and 15 goal seasons. other than some better offensive output from clarkson, clarksons game now and armstrongs then aren't so different.
version 2.0 in the sense that clarkson will be grossly overpaid as a ufa, and his contract will become regrettable well before it's finished |

No one is worrying about whats going to happen with franson? maybe package him with our 1st and try and move up in the draft, cause i don't want to pay him 4 mil+ |

first thing i thought of when voynov signed his extension.
i think franson is a huge part of this blueline, but the price for high quality rfa defenseman seems to have peaked. throw gardiner, the first, and another quality piece in there, and you have quite the attractive package.
if franson were to go, he'd have to be replaced somehow. that would be a big hole in an already middle of the pack at best blueline. |

well if franson goes no way we move gardiner. i think franson and our 1st can easily jump us to the mid 1st round area and hopefully grab Alex Wennberg, but I wouldn't be opposed to adding a bit more to move up even higher to grab monahan. since calgary is expected to win now, maybe franson, our 1st and a roster player could be enough to get the 6th overall pick |

with josi and voynov signing for 4mil on long term deals, i can't see him taking 3.5. not to mention franson put up more points and had 6 in 7 in the playoffs |

He'll probably get the exact same contract as voynov on less term. 4 mil 3-5 years. I think he's worth the cash in the long term.

The josi deal was a stupid deal the preds signed him for that much and that long cause thet are scared he will leave like suter. Voynov was a good signing, hes a really good player. Franson had 1 good half season with us, doesnt justify over 4 |

in my opinion, if franson goes it needs to be for something that can help now. franson and the first should be an attractive package for a center not named stastny. we have some nice pieces that can be added to make it even more attractive without crippling where the team has made it to now.
no doubt franson would need to be replaced somehow. it opens another hole up. |

pass? i'd easily even just let him sign an offer sheet even if it was 3.5 mil cause we get a 1st and 3rd. i'd say thats a pretty good deal for franson |

yea but what center is available though? its better to draft one and let them develop like we did with kadri. get a kid like monahan who wants to be here and he will stay with us. |

either way both signings are leverage for fransons agent. if he wants a big contract, he has the ammo to lobby for it.
before this season wilson used him as a 7th dman, carlyle gives him icetime and he excels. it all works in fransonns favour |
