I sincerely doubt the Flames go after Fucale in the first round, despite several others thinking they might. Im not very high on Petan and would hope they selected someone better with their 22nd pick. Flames need some size, which he does not provide.

So, if your question was either those three guys in specific or Nathan, I go with Nathan.

- Colin Dambrauskas

Thing is Petan's underlying numbers are as good as the top picks in this draft. His EV points are as high as anybody's. If he's there at 28, I can see them taking him. I'd be thrilled if we picked Monohan, Morrisey & Hartman. No, I think the flames desperately need these 3 players in their depth at this stage of their rebuild. We cant afford what it would take to get that #1. Focus on getting # 5, trade Gio or Wideman ++ to get that pick, but Sven, Brodie, Backs & that #6 stays. Anything or pick(s) are fair game in trying to acquire #5 or any top 10 pick.

Though I see your point, Calgary would be best to draft the best guys available to them with their three picks, allowing them to stockpile on talent and potentially allow for trades down the road. They could very much have a solid chance at drafting high again next year to add to this. Mackinnon would be great, but in my humble opinion three prospects like the ones available at this years draft would be better long term. Just the way I see's it!

This is why I don't agree... and also why Sherman didn't take the deal. Look especially at the list of 6th overalls... Monahan could theoretically turn into a comparable player to a Mackinnon. But he's much more likely to become a Derick Brassard, or Gilbert Brule, or (God forbid) a Rico Fata or Daniel Tkaczuk...

I'm not a fan of adding Baertschi, just because he's already proving to be a top 6 NHLer. Same with Brodie and Backlund. Every other player would be fair game though. 6,22,28 + Horak/Reinhart/Granlund/Gaudreau/Hanowski... whoever. If it gets us Mackinnon it's worth it.

I'm not sure why Feaster is taking the heat for offering up the 3 picks for the first overall pick... seriously though, I know the Flames lack depth in the organization but they also lack a franchise-type player. Very rarely are these types of guys found past the first few picks of any draft (although it is possible), but if the Flames traded those 3 picks to land a guy like Jones or MacKinnon, I'm all for it. Personally I think they would take Jones at #1 if the Avs made that deal, but I also think Florida could be willing to deal their #2 pick and the Flames could end up with MacKinnon anyway.

So ask yourself why does any other team do this? Why are they trading quality for quantity? Have to give something proven.

I agree with you, but I'm not trying to win the trade for the other team. I'm trying to entice them just enough that they think it might be worth it.

Hence why Colorado didn't take the deal....

I'd also rather throw someone like Glencross at Florida

Keep the picks and stockpile some talent. Let's be honest here...the flames will be in the running again next year for a top 3 selection. so just wait a year and next draft you can probably get a "franchise" player. No need to trade all those assets for 1 pick.

Just based on the position in the draft for the last 2 picks, it really isnt that enticing for the Avs to take them. Its way more of a gamble to acquire those picks and try and draft some core players that deep in the draft. The 6th is only the pick that has some value to replace the 1st overall.

I think both teams did the right thing offering and rejecting the trade. Keep the picks or package the 22nd and 28th and maybe move up to the 15th position.
The 6th, and the 15th range pick and maybe a prospect could get florido to start thinking it over. I am sure the Avs are taking Jones, so that would leave you guys to draft MacKinnon.

In order to get a franchise player you'll have to make them at the very least think they've won for the short term.

This isn't your normal trading for a 30 year old superstar where as a GM you can convince yourself that the guys salary is too much for you to continue paying and that he's better days are behind him. This is for a young player who's salary has zero effect on the salary cap, heck for some teams it's a bonus to have such a small cap hit.

I just don't see teams letting those top 3 picks go as easily as say a Heatley or Pronger.

Sherman no longer has any say on Trades, its Roy who will be making trade calls.
There was an interesting article in the denver paper about that. Apparently teams have to list 3 people to the NHL who have authority to sign off on trades. And Sherman didnt make that list. Kroenke, Roy,and Sakic did

I know, but the 3 picks plus one of our top prospects are all potential right now too. At some point, quantity becomes quite attractive.

What are your thoughts on Shana-ban rumoured to be a VP of hockey ops?

Mackinnon will be a great player, there is no doubt. But having 3 first round selections added to the depth chart and NOT giving up a current prospect in addtion would just be wiser. Keeping these 4 prospects which the Flames would likely walk away with by deciding not to make the trade could serve them quite well down the road. Whos to say that Baertschi doesnt become a threat in the NHL and one of the three first rounders picked become great themselves? Tough to find out if you trade them away. Ask the Leafs how the feel about trading first round selections, and then having to watch them play in the playoffs with one of their rivals.

The draft is all about potential, and it cant be realized if you dont give it a chance. The cost that it would take to acquire Mackinnon(or the draft selection) would be far too high for the Flames in their current position. Draft the best players you have with your three picks, or move the two later picks + a later prospect for a higher 2nd selection and develop the heck out of these guys.

flames are in the worst position moving forward of any other team in the nhl. the should deal any players off the roster for picks or prospects and just draft best player available with all 3 picks. I would start from goal out with all things being equal. at 6 I take lindholm more than likely over nurse or Monahan. at 22 I take fucale if he is there and if not try to take D with remaining 2 picks unless they like a forward way more than whats left at D.

flames have to make sure they go full rebuild and they will more than likely be the fav in the Mcdavid sweep stakes in 2 years.

Doubtful. Maybe if you want Carolina's or Nashville's. pick. Granted it wouldn't be all those assets, but just for the quantity become attractive.

That's a heavy dose of hyperbole there. Obviously there's work to be done, but there's no reason to go all Chicken Little...

As far as starting from the net out, I'd argue that they've already addressed the goal position pretty well, both now and for the future. Ramo, Berra, Joey Mac, Gillies, Brossoit, and Ortio, give us a decent base from which to operate. I'm happy to keep drafting a goalie a year to keep the depth strong, but there's no reason to burn 1st rounders on them.

Barkov will not slide to 6th, he'll be gone at #4.

Monahan reminds me a lot of Cody Hodgson. He doesn't do any one thing off the charts, but he has great hockey sense and a playmaker's read of the game. I think if you guys took him, and developed him properly, he could be a real solid contributor, maybe one day captain of your team.
