All we do all day long on this site is ASSUME, yet somehow I'm doing it wrong?
The above paragraph has quite a few conflicting points. Regardless, Briere is not being screwed at all. He's in control and taking it to the bank. - wolfhounds
He is getting screwed because his kids live here and he loves the organization and the city. He's said all along that he doesn't want to leave, for himself and his family. Now, because of a CBA feature, he will not be able to play out the last two years of his deal as he expected.
I don't understand how you are losing respect for him. |

Dude wants to stay because of his Kids man. I can't fault a father for wanting to be by his kids. He's got 2 years left that's a shadow of his current Cap hit. I would not be surprised if he signs a 1 year deal somewhere close so he can come back to Philly at a discount the following year. Why? Because that's the fastest way back to his family. Briere is a team guy but he's gotta do right by his family first. Dude's got my respect for sure. - flyler
That is a lie. The fastest way back to his family is to take the buyout $ and retire. |

I said I understand it from a financial/capitalization point of view. Did you miss that? - wolfhounds
Not at all.
What YOU failed to acknowledge in the equation is the most important component to Briere... What's best for Danny and his family.
If you think that ANY player puts the franchise before what's best for himself and/or his family, then you are clearly out to lunch. There's more than just financial and capitalization involved here. |

How can anyone lose respect for Briere? He's caught in the cross-hairs of a business decision and whatever happens happens...It has nothing to do with respect... |

Exactly. He's basically being told he has to leave the place he wants to be the most. |

Yes, no big deal...It is what it is...The Flyers need cap space and Briere's on the downward side of his career and it's time to move on... |

So your position is the Flyers would buyout Briere without exploring potential trades? That makes sense to you? - wolfhounds
Makes about as much sense as you assuming some team is willing to trade for Briere.
What team is it you think is needing his cap hit? There are only 6 teams with less than the cap floor committed to next year already, and 5 of those 6 will hit the cap floor just from resigning their own players and getting to the point of icing a full roster. You are insulting Briere based entirely on the assumption that the New York Islanders wanted to trade for him. Fail. |

Anybody that brings up Briere's dedication to family is conveniently forgetting that he divorced his wife. And now she won't move with the kids to be near his new team, as is her right. I know a lot of variables go into a situation like that...and he may have had very good reasons for doing so. But no matter what those reasons were, the fact remains that his decision limited his options to balance his professional goals alongside his family ones. |

Are serious with all this kids and leaving stuff? His kids will be fine, wherever he ends up. He will make substantially more money if he plans to continue his career than if he stays. I have zero remorse. |

This family sh*t is really starting to make me sick...Most athlete's have to deal with family issues as it's a part of the sporting culture...He got lucky that he's able to make tons of money off of a buy out and then sign elsewhere for more $...That's the (frank)ing bottom line... |

I'm not advocating he not get bought out, I'm saying it's ridiculous to lose respect for him for not waiving his NMC. |

You're forgetting that Briere has primary custody of his kids, and his decision would be to allow his ex-wife to have easier access to them, rather than the other way around. |

Calling him a top UFA is over selling what you would get if you signed him. I don't buy the QB/WR comment and think Brierre's best days are behind him |

Let me summarize the next few weeks of hb:
Briere getting bought out
Bryz getting bought out
Bernier going to Philly
Yandle or Edler going to Philly
Flyers trading 11th pick
Other teams doing meaningless sh*t - Flyfreaky
Any Hab rumours? |

Possible, but unlikely. - wolfhounds
Because you're qualified to make that assumption about Briere.
- Did Briere sign a contract and plan to play with Philly until 2014-2015? - Yes
- Is Briere and his family involved in community? - Pretty sure (as players/wives/girlfriends typically are)
- Are Briere's kids in school in the Philly area? - Yes
- Does Briere have family and friends in the area? - Pretty sure
- Does Briere like playing in front have one of the biggest markets - Most likely
- Could Briere be pissed off that Philly wants to ship him out? - A good chance, which is why he isn't cooperating
Again, there is WAY MORE than just money involved here. The ONLY side that involves money is the organization's, because they're a business. Unfortunately for Philly, there are two sides in the matter and Briere has rights. |
