Well with that said the truth probably lies somewhere in between. The teams looking to reach the cap floor are generally not any players first choice of destination. I wouldn't be surprised if he was willing to waive his NMC to go to a team he wouldn't mind playing for. I think it's a bit much to ask him to lose out on money and end up stuck somewhere he doesn't want to be for the next 3 years. - ehabs9
Supposedly a huge consideration for Briere is his family situation. He's divorced and his ex still lives in the Philadelphia area.
Of course, that may be bunk as he signed to play in Germany during the lockout.
In Briere's case, he may have accepted a deal at the trade deadline(it was rumored that both Boston and St Louis asked about him), but now there's no reason to waive his NMC. He can simply get the buy out and receive the $833,334 a year from the Flyers for the next 4 years and then sign a deal where he wants for $2-3mm and double dip. |

Which is why it makes zero sense to wait and risk an injury that could prevent a buy out next summer. - Jsaquella

So your position is the Flyers would buyout Briere without exploring potential trades? That makes sense to you? |

Let me summarize the next few weeks of hb:
Briere getting bought out
Bryz getting bought out
Bernier going to Philly
Yandle or Edler going to Philly
Flyers trading 11th pick
Other teams doing meaningless sh*t |

It's called leverage. It's called A CONTRACT.

The most sought after UFA, I don't think so. He produced 6 goals last year and 16 the year before, he's CLEARLY on the downslide. |

Yup, like I said, I understand that decision, that drive to capitalize...to an extent. Either way, he is (and has been) getting paid millions of dollars for the next 2 years at least, so in no way can it be argued the move is anything but selfish. Which is fine, but some of my respect (not all, of course) leaves with him. - wolfhounds
Eh, its just a business decision.
Briere has no spot now or likely in the future for the Flyers with Giroux/Couts/Schenn/Laughton at center.
Even if one of them becomes a winger, I can't see Briere as a player back on the Flyers. In some other role, maybe. |

Of course I wold explore trades but to lose respect for the guy for ASSUMING he refused is silly.
Let's say he did refuse; why does he owe the Flyers to be traded? They're the ones buying him out. If anything, Briere is the party that's being screwed in this scenario. How can you lose respect for a guy who is getting shafted and wants more control over where he spends the next part of his career, plus can get more money leading into retirement? |

I like Briere and all that big give me a f'ing break. In a salary cap world, he is a horrendous fit. Even since the days of Richards and Carter, Briere hasn't fit on this team. His position and skills are a big problem.
He is either a first or second line center. That's it. And center is the one position the Flyers have been deep at for quite a bit.
He is also a penalty machine and poor defensively. He may be a perfect fit somewhere, but not the Flyers. The decision to buy out Briere is as easy as Gordon Gekko's decision to take apart Bluestar Airlines. |

UMMM ... it will take something else significant to get Yandle than the 11th pick.

It has to be assumed the Flyers approached Briere about a trade and he refused to waive his NMC, so the buyout is the only option available.
I don't know about other Flyers fans, but someone who refuses a trade but then enters the market as a UFA and accepts an offer from another team would in no way, shape or form remain a player I have respect for. Do I understand the business decision? Absolutely. But doing something for money does not necessarily equal respectable, and in this case, is quite the opposite.
Once he's gone - if this is the way it works out - he should stay gone. - wolfhounds

so the only way you are happy and have no beef with briere is if he goes to a struggling team that has the cap room to fit him in? otherwise he's just selfish and trying to capitalize monetarily? because thats the only feasible trade that could be done. |

All we do all day long on this site is ASSUME, yet somehow I'm doing it wrong?
The above paragraph has quite a few conflicting points. Regardless, Briere is not being screwed at all. He's in control and taking it to the bank. |

I think the wise thing to do would be to buy out Bryz and ride Mason and a solid vet back-up for a year...Upgrade the defense and take no prisoners next year... |

Dude wants to stay because of his Kids man. I can't fault a father for wanting to be by his kids. He's got 2 years left that's a shadow of his current Cap hit. I would not be surprised if he signs a 1 year deal somewhere close so he can come back to Philly at a discount the following year. Why? Because that's the fastest way back to his family. Briere is a team guy but he's gotta do right by his family first. Dude's got my respect for sure. - flyler
