Interesting rumor from twitter. Take it with a grain of salt as it's from one of HockyyInsiderr's buddies:

Holmgren can't be that dumb. Good news for us if true though.

As a Pens fan I'd love for that deal to happen strait up

He's an interesting read, but I wouldn't believe him if he told me that the earth revolved around the sun.

One team that I haven't seen much of in any of these proposed trades is San Jose.

Their best puck moving defensemen (Dan Boyle) is old and UFA after this coming season, and they have a ton of money coming off the cap (if Thornton and/or Marleau both leave).

If you recall the periods of time Letang was out in the past 2 seasons this team struggled. Now that I've said that you have 4 or 5 young dmen Despres included who will need a spot on this roster in the next 3 years. I have to believe that Shero not only drafted these guys to land forwards via trade but to actually play and fill in when some of these guys leave. Have rookie contracts on that blue line will be huge in retaining guys like Kunitz, Duper, Cooke. Letang isn't easily replaceable but we at least have options. Get some young forwards and trade him. Assuming he is asking for top dollar we don't know that yet.

The Pens were 9-4 without him this past season.

They've been brought up.

Couture and Vlasic. That's my wish list.

I would rather keep him, but I just don't think he's going take 6-6.5M to stay in Pittsburgh. Plus I'm really leery about giving any d-man more than a 4 year contract, no matter what his name his (Orr excluded).
- errey12

I understand that... I'd be more concerned with the no movement clause... if you had an 7-8 year deal in place and pouliot developed into a replacement in 3-4 years.. it would be nice to be able to move him then

Can't see them parting with Couture. Him and Pavelski are their future 1-2 punch when Thornton and Marleau move on.

So there win % was .692 without him and .771 with him. Where are you going with this? I'd be curious to see goal differential in that time frame. Pretty sizeable difference in win % with him

Neither can I. Can't see them parting with Vlasic either.

When I was 11 I didn't really think my parents were going to buy me a Ferrari, but it was still on my wish list.

Point is, someone is going to have to part with someone they don't want to if they want Letang.

Moving Couture leaves then in a little bit of a pickle at center But they have some good prospect depth there.

You said they struggled without Letang in the lineup last season. I wouldn't call 9-4 struggling.

There is no doubt he will be missed.

There is no doubt he makes the team better.

There is no doubt we resign him at his current money.

The point is we don't have the money to sign him unless we want to fill the roster with cast offs based on what he will be asking for and what he deserves. Sometimes you just have to cut bait and recoup what you can, this is one of those times. They made that decision when they inked Malkin. I'd rather get some useful parts, which we will if he's dealt, than risk losing him for nothing next summer.

Struggle was maybe to strong of a word but you can see a drop in just wins and losses. Curious what the goal differential was and pp%. Though the PP% might actually be higher they dominated for a stretch with Martin running the point.

Only problem is, i don't see a current roster player that could help the Pens in return. They have the pick and the prospects though.

Edit: They are also tight up against the cap in the next season.

Yeah, but the win % at .692 gives the Pens 57 wins in an 82 game season. That's enough to win the President's trophy.

I just looked and retract that statement.

I have interest in Skinner, McBain and Faulk. But I didn't realize they were all RFA's after next season. Skinner for sure will be looking for a substantial raise.

Skinner signed a extension last summer. He has a 5.725 mil cap hit until 2018-2019

That's a little high.

Ek needs to update his cap central...
