If they don't sign Dupuis Iginla comes back into play.

unless he stays at same price or something in the 2mil range... rossi just tweeted talks with his reps and pens started... by end of day dupes will be a pen, just don't know for how long or what .. my guess is 2.35/2yrs

Not a slight, but I think people are overrating him as a long term viable option - one that will do great things.
- Oneonta Penguin

I think he can be a good or even great goaltender. But he still really hasn't had the chance to prove himself as a starter. There seems to be a lot of interest generating. Maybe it's just hype from 28 fan bases eager to get on with the offseason, but a bidding war could drive up the price on Bernier.

that is a major major plus if he signs that. id be surprised if he does though. if he is only getting that small of a raise, i can see him wanting more years

Would people really be upset about Iggy leaving? I didn't see the gritty veteran I thought we were getting. Sure he put some points up but outside of the PP I found him to be ok. Nothing more nothing less. He didn't play with Sid? Well he did play with Geno and Neal which I would be willing to bet people would line up to play out of position with. Just my opinion of him I think he is a terrific person and very likeable but his game to me is very replaceable by younger talent.

dont get me wrong. im definitely pumping his tires a bit here, but if it became some frantic crazy black friday shopping thing where people are falling over themselves to pay out the nose for him, then i wouldnt go crazy for him. but from a flyers standpoint, i think a one for one swap with read would be ideal for both sides

People fighting for Bernier are going to be disappointed IMO.
- Oneonta Penguin

....and I think LA will be asking too much...I'd rather take a chance on Halak or Elliott. They probably would be cheaper.

Alright, with Shero starting talks with Dupuis, what will his contract be if he signs??

I got 4 years, 11 mil 2.75 cap hit.

3 years 10 million would be my guess. Shero won't give that 4th year so bumps his average up

I for one would love to see Iggy back for less than $3M.

I think Shero will give him the 4th year because:
a) some money will be left on the table with the added year
b)Dupuis will still be able to contribute at 38, abeit in a lesser role.

I think Dupuis's goal is to finish his career as a Penguin

I would happily give iggy 3 mil/2 yrs, dupes 2.35/3yrs, cooke 2mil/2yrs and letang either stays for 5mil/6yrs or gets traded

Clutterbuck would indeed be a good fit...I still like COL as a potential Letang destination, if so I would be interested in Steve Downie as part of the return. Finally, I think people may be over-estimating the D return Shero would expect. PITT has Martin, Niskanen and Despres who can move the puck pretty well. Martin can handle PP1 time. It's not the best D, but at some point the kids gotta play...Englland/Bortuzzo are 5-7 guys, so I would be interested in picking up a true shut down D to play top minutes (easier said than done).

Martin - NEED
Niskanen - England
Despres - Orpik
Bortuzzo

If we can get 1st overall pick in a deal with Letang (signed), wow. I would turn that around and pick up call up CGY and ask for their 3 1sts, Giordano and Glencross, or DAL in exchange for Eriksson, Dillon, 1st and 2nd.

- mventres

First, Niskanen needs to go. He was terrible.
Secondly, do you honestly think Calgary would trade Giordano, Glencross and their three firsts for the overall top pick, or Dallas make that deal? LOL.

Finally, for poops and giggles, let's say one of those GMs makes the utterly ridiculous deal and does that - how do you exactly fit Dillon and Glencross within the cap, or the Dallas pair? That would mean Kunitz or Neal must be sent packing for starters.

That is definitely not happening, not with the contracts thrown out in the past few weeks to aging, puck moving defensemen.

agree. So, if they can't resign Dupes, which they will, but I will play along - how in the hell does Iggy come back into play? Iggy will be searching for more $$$ than Dupes.

I know.. it sucks... we will see who he goes to.. im saying west coast team at draft top 10 depending who goes 1st and 2nd... need a winger or two in the system...

Not that it would ever happen, but the Dallas pair wouldn't be a problem. Dillon is at 900k, and Erikkson is at 4.25 mil. Taking away Letang's 3.5 mil, you're only adding 1.75 in cap space, but gaining a top 6 forward.

yeah. if they cant afford dupes, i dont know how the afford iggy. if iggy manages to stay for a reasonable price, i will not be devastated, but if they prioritize him over dupuis it will mark the first time i really have to question shero. even if they would like to try the iginla experiment over the course of a full year, it still doesnt change the fact that what he brings to the table is a luxury. dupuis' skill set is a need.

Just looking at everything, the Oilers seem like the optimal destination. 7th overall pick, Smid, and one of their higher end winger prospects not named Magnus.

and i still would like someone in a suit to explain to me what the (frank) happened to niskanen. i understand he isnt exactly weber, but jesus christ. i thought he had a nice little skill set, for a bargain price, to bring some athleticism and puck moving ability to the bottom pair. however, he became atrocious.

then theres that awesome decision to pair him with letang once both were atrocious, but weve been into that enough already...

Well, CGY apparently offered up the 3 1sts already. With the $6mil earmarked for Letang we could cover Glencross and Giordano. Niskanen wasn't amazing at all, but I think a situation where he is given more responsibility, maybe decreasing time over the season while Despres gets more acclimated could be good. I have said already a few times, PITT should deal Kunitz at the draft as he's not going to get any more valuable to other teams and maybe we could recoup a 1st round pick in return (why not, Jagr/Iginla got 1sts, Morrow got Morrow, etc). In the end PITT would get something like 4 1sts, Giordano + Glencross + whoever else in the COL deal and lose out on Letang and Kunitz, likely rights to Kennedy and a prospect as well...I think in the end we're pretty well off.

If it's the DAL deal, again, Eriksson is a nice target now as he's coming off a so-so year and Letang (if he would sign) would also allow them to move Gogo for a fwd. Maybe DAL wants Kunitz...you get the idea...

I think we agree Dupes is way more valuable to Pittsburgh than Iggy. I can't see Shero putting more value in an older guy on the final legs of his brilliant career over Dupes, who seems to get better with age; is a valuable PK contributor and does more things. I too would question Shero for that.

I'm going with with 4 years / $12 million ($3 mil hit).
