Crazy to think they played Boucher and Leighton (1 game all year) over him in the playoffs.

It's hard to believe that the last goalie drafted by the Flyers who developed into a top notch starter for the club was Hextall in 1982. 1982!! I was still in friggin high school back then!!

So basically what Bill is saying is that I haven't even been alive to see the Flyers draft a top starting goalie. I don't know whether to or

Lol, I love how after Bill just got done detailing exactly why it's often foolhardy to take a "consensus best goalie" in a draft, and how goalies take years and years to develop, the very first comment is about drafting Fucale and possibly inserting him into the lineup in 12 months.

It is what it is. Maybe I'm the only one but I don't exactly take this season as serious as the rest. I'm pleasantly surprised with the Final and who's made it so far but anything before this, I think many need to shrug off. Bob's team didn't make the playoffs and while I won't discount his solid season, it is only a half season and he will have to re-prove himself. In fact, I think it's so silly he might even make the cover of NHL13.

Re the Flyers D:
Assuming they go ahead and get Streit signed. I would most likely not make any deals giving up young talent and/or high picks for another dman. I would just go with Schenn, Timonen, Streit, Coburn, Grossmann and Gustafsson as my top 6, Gervais as my 7th although if Bourdon can get healthy I can see him taking Gervais' spot and Lauridsen as my 1st call up. I would look to trade Mez for whatever I can get as he is simply not worth his cap hit to be a 3rd pair guy.

I agree as long as you take a D man with the first pick and develop him to be ready when Streit is gone.

What would you trade Mez for (pick/prospect/player)?

I wonder if they ever really tried to offer up Meszaros for the rights to Mark Streit?

Doubtful.

Mez would probably be worth the risk for some other teams because he only has one year left at $4M.

Whatever I could get. Most likely a 3rd round pick or a 3rd line winger with size. While I know Mez has been hurt a lot and his contract and cap hit aren't cheap, there is such a premium on dmen in the league that I still believe he has some trade value. If he was a forward, they would be lucky to get a 7th rounder for him.

With Bryz here Bob was never going to play a ton of games...Biggest issue is not being patient with him everyone could see the kid had talent but needed some coaching.

Kind of reminds me of when the Phillies traded away Ryne Sandberg in a deal to get Juan DeJesus. That moved kicked off over 20 years of crappy baseball with 93 as the only exception during that time.

Correct! The mistake wasn't trading Bob, the mistake was not staying patient and signing a complimentary vet goalie to push Bob, rather than forking over huge $$ for Bryz. Once Bryz was signed, Bob had to go as the Flyers had no way of knowing at that time that just one year later they would have the option of buying out Bryz.

I don't think so, the Phils farm system had become joke by the mid 80s and they were terrible at signing free agents. Also from the mid 80s to the opening of CBP they were one of the cheaper teams in baseball.

The Flyers on the other hand, are certainly not cheap and they seem to draft pretty well, especially in the 1st round. While nearly all of the Phils 1st rounders were flops during that era, the Flyers over the last 15 years have taken guys like Gagne, Justin Williams, Joni Pitkanen, Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Steve Downie, Giroux, JVR, Luca Sbisa, Couturier and Laughton with their 1st round picks. That's a pretty good group!

Meh. I meant in a later round. I don't care about this year now. We already have missed the playoffs playing "Let's force the roster back into playoff contention." Rebuild.

Got love hindsight, eh??
Should have drafted Scott Stevens in 1982 instead of Ron Sutter.
Should have kept Forsberg and not made the Lindros deal
Should have never hired Wayne Cashman as head coach in 1997
Should have tried to trade Lindros in the summer of '98 when they still could have gotten peak value for him
Should have never traded Rod Brind'amour
Should have signed Cujo over Beezer in 1998
Should have never traded Patrick Sharp
Should have kept Bob and not signed Bryz

Please, every team in the league has a list like this!!
