Proven winner because he plays a minor role on an elite team. He's also quite a bit older, and is actually not that good at defending. Not as good as Nick Schultz is. - Jack-artist
wow. we aren't watching the same thing at all.
and I mean as much of Schultz weak, medicore play as I mean to pump ference's tires.
Schultz has nothing redeeming about last seasons campaign. nothing |

So Lindholm is just more of what already have enough of, eh? Hmm... I was under the impression that our team needs smart, skilled, and tenacious two-way players that come from winning teams. Boy was I ever wrong!
Bottom line is that we need BETTER players. If Monahan, Barkov, and Nichushkin have been taken and if there isnt a deal out there that makes us a good deal better, we'd better be taking this guy. He's a safe pick that projects as a responsible and tenacious 2nd line C. Maybe he makes Gagner expendable a few years down the road. BPA drafting always the way to go!
Note the word tenacious as it was used by a number of scouting services when describing him. - MaximumBone

Put Chara here, does that all of a sudden mean our d-men are really better than they are? - Lahey
Yes... |

No it just means they would all play more sheltered minutes which might give them a greater chance to succeed - Ihatebrianburke

Add Chara we make the playoffs and no one makes fun of our D
He'd likely fix the 'Oilers are small and wimpy' tag too - robin_steele264

6.7 is the cutoff for just a 1, 2, 3 pick. That is not what we pay the other players but yeah they will get that high sometime down the road. The salary cap is going to rise. It is not stuck at 64 mil. When we come to the point where the rest of those players get those raises (next year for schultz and RNH and 2 for Nail) the cap will be up.
Why do you think other teams are signing such high contracts for players? They know the small cap is temporary. Plus half our budget for the top goalie in the league and 5 all stars is doable. Lots of teams do that. Look at Vancouver and what they pay just on their dmen, goalies and 3 forwards. Almost their entire budget and they usually do pretty good until the playoffs. Or LA is another example. Kopitar, Richards, Carter, Doughty and Quick. Plus they give decent salaries to others and they are not having cap issues.
I would trade my first second and third pick next year for rask if I was a GM. - bsteinley
that's not the major problem. You say BOS wouldn't do it because of cap problems. EDM WOULD HAVE BRUTAL CAP PROBLEMS! When the cap goes up it'd still be like around 30M for around 20 players. MPS gone, all #5 D men aside from J Schultz, no depth |

Which would kinda go back to why a guy like Ference can be succesful in a top 4 role in Boston, but not in Edmonton. It's why Boychuk can be a #3 there. - Lahey
He'd still be playing 2nd pairing minutes here or there. He's not a 1st pairing guy wherever he goes. Like hugefemale dog said I would love to have any of Boychuk, Ference, Seidenberg on our team. |

yes, ference is a true 3rd pairing guy if that's what you're referring to - hugefemale dog77
I can't think of any teams other than Chicago or NYR that have the organizational depth to play Ference as a 3rd pairing guy. |

Gagner, Plante Nash
To go further. It's not a shot at anyone in particular. I see OG is here so I'll explain. Just because you have 3 picks doesn't mean problems are solved. Just something to keep in mind when selecting 3 assistant janitors. |

Not at 6. He's a great prospect and has the makings of a REAL solid NHLer, but I dont think he's on same level as these other guys. What Lindholm did in the SEL is really being overshadowed by the remarkable season Barkov had in the lesser (albeit only slightly so) SM-Liiga. Consider last season's most impressive Euro (Forsberg) came from equally an dominant Leksand team in the league below the SEL (Allsvenskan) with a stat line of 8G 9A in 43GP. He (Forsberg) was garnering a good deal of top-3 votes (with only 2" on Lindholm) and is now set to play full time in an NHL top-9. What does that tell YOU? |

The fact of the matter is there is a long way to go yet. There is no real core of young guys to build around yet. Just think the whole Cogs-Gagner-Nilsson era in Edmonton.
Keep in mind we had some real good up and coming d prospects in Gilbert, Pitkanen and Grebeshkov during that era as well. So it wasn't like we had prospects at one position only. |

Ya I understand that....but that doesn't mean the exact same thing will happen with. Different players, different teams. Time will tell. |

Won't discount it, but to think the light is already at the end of the tunnel doesn't seem right to me.
If this does turn out to be 2003 and you get Michalek, Kesler and Perry then things will jump ahead a lot. Although even then it took those guys min 3 years to make the big impact.
I also changed Pouilot from Kesler, but still the point is valid in that it's still a process even with the best drafting. |

Oh yeah! We're just preaching caution. The situation in CGY right reminds me all too much of the Oilers circa-2006-07. When I said this last season, I got a response of " " and "Kipprusoff". Heres hoping they can avoid what weve gone through! |
