Ward is arguably a top 5 goalie in the league. I would do it in a heartbeat. Then move dubie. - Oilfan19

Really? You dont think so? - Oilfan19
Hell no. Not top 10. Off the top of my head, Lundqvist, Rinne, Anderson, Quick (despite having a terrible year), Rask (starting to get enough games to be considered), Halak (not a great year either though), I’d take Miller ahead of Ward. Jimmy Howard. There are a couple of old guys that are falling out of the ranks, like Luongo, Backstrom, Kipper obviously, Vokoun. Price is sort of like Ward, spots of top play, among mostly unimpressive play, but he’s younger than Ward, and so I’d give him the nod there. Schneider needs more games to be fully considered, but will probably be ahead of Ward soon enough. One full season of strong play and I'd put him up there.
Given salaries, and play as fairly new to the NHL goalies, I would rather Dubnyk or Reimer over Ward, easily. |

Seriously, just start focusing on the D. IT's long overdue. - Dirte
I don't understand why people keep on saying that we need improvement on defense. Yeah, it's not the best, I know. But at least we don't have holes in our defensive pairings like we do with our forwards. If you (realistically) look at who we have left for forwards after all the obvious players are sent to waivers, bought out, or dealt off, then you'll know what I'm talking about. It's a scary situation. If we don't do anything to improve our forwards then we litterally won't have a team come next season.
I'll help you out.

Personally I don't there are too many guys this can be said about year after year.
Lundqvist is about the only one that is consistently there. Rinne is another. |

Do you honestly feel that the biggest problem the Oilers have is depth forwards, and that’s why they can’t make the playoffs?
If you have a bunch of top forwards in the top 6, a solid D, and a decent goalie (which you’ve been getting), you could fire just about any plugs in the bottom 6 and make the playoffs.
No, the D needs some help, big time.

And how many times in his career can you have honestly said that Ward has been top 10 in the league? Or even top 15? Not very often.

Inexperience is hurting us. We could get away with a below average defense if our forwards didn't leave the d hung and dry so much, which then leaves DD left by himself. |

Kinda why I don't like getting into the whole we need a legit top 5 or 10 goalie, because that list changes so much. |

We'd have to see what could get for him though. I'm not sure as to what teams are willing to give up for him. - mbxiphos1527
Yeah, I was thinking he's a nice "+" in a package - be it the 7th or any blueprint on a deal that gets the Oilers a needed piece coming back.
To your point though, one for one, Paajarvi could be attractive to a cap strapped team that wants a little more youth. Does he get us an established grittier third line guy with little less offense. Certainly seems possible - same with Hemsky and I guess that's first and foremost.

Maybe you can “get away” with it, and I don’t disagree, the forwards need to learn defensive responsibility. It comes with time. But just by the way you use the words “get away with below average D” tells me that you know that’s the top priority for the Oilers. It’s undoubtedly the weakness of the team. Had the Oilers not been using a shutdown type system, the Oilers would have been one of the worst teams in terms of goals against. Dubnyk would be seeing 35 shots plus a game. |

And what you’ve been getting may not be setting the world on fire, but it’s been more than adequate. Certainly enough to say that it’s absolutely not the first priority of the team. If I were you guys, I’d actually want to see what Dubnyk can do with a solid D in front of him.

Exactly. But we need those bottom 6 forwards with NHL experience who can play physical without being a total plug. All I was trying to say is that unless we wanna bring up a bunch of players from OKC and let them fill those holes we have next season (which we're obviously not going to do because that's just stupid) then we're gonna have to start picking up players.
Never said the D wasn't an issue. It's almost as big of mess as the forwards. But if you really think about it, J Schultz, Kelfbom and Petry are all pretty good d-men. And if Belov is as good as people say he is, then that's just one less piece we need to worry about. Of coarse Klefbom won't be fully ready this year. But he will be in a few years if not next year. But once again this comes to back to the central theme of inexperience. |

he's had 1 above .920 SV% in his career. Same can be said about Dubey. but Dubey isn't coming off a .908 |
