Parise, Rolston and Arnott went on to be pretty good.

Then you have guys like Sykora, Langenbrunner, Gionta, Madden that were useful elsewhere, but never as pivotal as they were for the Devils.

Gomez and Gionta were the ones I had in mind with that original comment.

I like the Clarkson/Lapointe comparison.

Pure hand waving here, and I don't know if there is data to back up this assertion, but how often do free agents come out of NJ and actually flourish elsewhere?

- johndewar

Honestly, I don't know if that even matters. The Flyers already have 2 Power Forwards that have the potential to be 30-30 players. I don't see a reason for them to overpay in Free Agency for another. They'd be much better off either promoting from within. Or targeting a physical Winger for about half the price.

Clarkson's had, what, 1.5 seasons of productive goal output? Unless you think he's the next coming of Knuble, and will experience his most productive years in his early-mid 30's, I'm not sure you could justify allocating that kind of money + term on him, especially when we already have existing power forwards entrenched in prime scoring roles.

At best, Clarkson's a late-bloomer like Knuble. More likely, somebody repeats the Martin Lapointe fiasco from way back when.

Yes! I love using his silly signing by Boston as an example of "What Not to Do."

He was put on Fedorov's line in a contract year. Boston didn't do the math.

Change of topic, but I had fun thinking of it...

Who do you hate more... Matthew Barnaby, Tie Domi, Sean Avery, or Darcy Tucker.

- youarewrong

Even golden retrievers hate Matthew Barnaby.

Luke Richardson from Spectors was saying the Hawks might pursue that with Hossa.

Trade him to a smaller team, they buy him out, and then Chicago resigns him for far less a year.

I believe this is fine to do.

- meduser

The League is going to have a problem with it. And according to Bill Meltzer, teams have already been warned about that type of maneuver.

Youarewrong - love it. In order (most hated), Sean Avery, Matthew Barnaby, Darcy Tucker, Tie Domi.

Avery is just a scumbag and hurts whatever team he's on. Barnaby was a punk but played his role well. Tucker isn't as toxic as the rest of the group.

Not that I don't hate Domi, but he was much more of a team player than someone like Avery and not only was willing to back up his play with his fists... but what very good at it.

I agree. I have zero interest in Clarkson as a Flyer.

My comment was more tagging up on a comment about Clarkson's potential future production.

Gomez, rofl.

I'd sign Clarkson if we could peddle him off for a Ryan McDonagh down the road.

Old men in Florida hate Matthew Barnaby.

I just remember the NHL 2Night lead-in by John Buccigross the night he tangled with the elderly Panthers fan: "Matthew Barnaby, what are you DOING?"

No, sorry for the bad transition. I meant he's cheap ($1M). He has a multiple year contract, but Homer keeps saying he wants size up front. Imagine him and Rinaldo on same line??

Homer can't sit still at the trade deadline (see: Steve Eminger). I can see him tossing over a 2nd rounder for Matt Martin and talk about how he's a "Philly rough-and-tumble kind of guy". A clear overreaction with the 2nd rounder, but you know what I mean.

This is a good one.

I don't hate Domi, necessarily. He's a cement head. The other 3, I found legitimately awful.

I'm going to say Darcy Tucker because he could hurt you in multiple ways.

For a guy that liked to fight, I can't remember Matthew Barnaby getting the better of many people. I can recall, at least twice, where Lindros beat Barnaby like Barnaby stole something. That was cathartic.

They could have easily done w/o the Briere signing, though... Carter, Richards were your top centers moving forward, still had a lot of pop from guys like Umberger, Lupul, Upshall... and they had a guy by the name of Giroux, with a very similar skill-set, coming up as well. They would have been much improved that following season with or w/o Briere, IMO.

They also might have been able to afford to keep Umberger and Upshall, and/pr might have had a little bit more $ to spend on the back-end so we didn't end up with Krajicek, Leighton and their fellow bargain-bin misfits.

You miss out on his 2009-10 playoff production, though: 30 points in 23 games. You also miss his 2007-08 playoff production: 16 points in 17 games. And maybe, without his signing, Timonen and Hartnell don't sign after their rights were acquired. Briere's signing showed the league the Flyers were seriously about a quick turnaround.

Just tired of the one-sided revisionist history without thinking through what else factored into a decision - or what that decision also inspired. It's not like a clinical surgical removal where nothing else is affected but what someone hates or dislikes about the team, its GM, or one person.

Who wants to give me odds the Flyers sign Tim Thomas to a 1 year deal?

That'd be awesome. That way he could offer "a day at the range shooting with Thomas" as his end of the year charity auction deal!

Just thinking back, and for all the grief I give Danny.

You couldn't go into the 07-08 season with Richards, carter, umber get as your top centers. Danny had something to do with their success/development
