It is a new year. Streit will help the transition game, for sure. But he's not a 30 minute a night guy.
- Jsaquella

True. And let's hope they know that. He had 23+ with turnstile D-partners on a historically poor (recently) team. I think his presence allows the top four to each get about 21 minutes a night or so. I'm sure Kimmo is happy about that.

And I'm sure Streit will be thrilled to have a competent, physical, stay-at-home partner (sorry Joe Finley and Matt Carkner).

Time to leave the city for a bit. It's been a pleasure as always, gents.

Take care.

agree w/ the overall tenor of this, though not all particulars

The only real problem I have with the article is that, while complaining and criticizing the Carter and Richards trades, he completely ignores what they got back...even going so far to mention 2 of them in a completely different context.

Adam Proteau is a large part of why I canceled my sub to The Hockey News. Awful writer, not funny and just annoys me

The real reason or reasons for the trades of Carter and Richards will probably never be known by the general public. Everyone has their own theory, but obviously something drastic happened.

Also, the Pronger eye injury drastically changed the charter of the team. It can be debated whether other injuries would have derailed him just the same, but they obviously had every intention of Pronger playing through the majority of his contract extension at a fairly effective level.

Whats the current consensus on Zadorov? He was way up high in a lot of people's top D men this year. Haven't heard much about him at all lately. Realisticly he should go no later than 15, right?

Probably cause he is just projecting to be a defensive defenseman lots of teams are looking for a puck mover. Flyers already have enough of the defensive d-man they need someone with some offensive game IMO.

He's like Pulock, all over the place. Probably would be gone by 15th, though

Oh, I totally agree. Just wonder because a lot of people had him going as the 2nd or 3rd Dman this year yet I havent seen his name in a while...

I'm sure he'd be thrilled to play for any team that will meet his demands. Hopefully, if it's 4 years at 5 mil per, it's not the Flyers.

The problem is, they have to waste so much energy and effort in their own end, because of the inability of the roster to play the system, that it seems as if they're not putting forth an effort.

It's hard to play with "jam"((frank) do I hate that ridiculous term), when you're busy back checking because the defensemen are asked to do too much with the puck and the transitional game consists largely of trying to clear the puck deep enough to get a change

- Jsaquella

Not only that, but they waste so much effort trying to forecheck deep, when they don't have a realistic chance to get there. So you pressure on the 2nd level or in the neutral zone. It's a read and react. That's how it is with top teams. They read the situation. With Laviolette, they are always trying to get in deep on the forecheck. And one pass or chip off the boards beats it. You can pressure the puck all over the ice. Not just deep in the offensive zone. And trying to get on the puck deep when there isn't a realistic chance. Is wasted effort that you talked about.
The more I watch teams like Boston, Chicago, and LA play. And how they pressure all over the ice, and play tight solid defense. The more I dislike Laviolette's style of play. Those teams are proof that you can be aggressively smart, and pressure the puck, while being responsible defensively. Compared to being recklessly aggressive as the Flyers have been. Even Mike Milbury saw it and commented on it.

I just have this feeling they are going to draft Nurse just so there can be endless stories of how McNabb is mentoring Nurse on how to handle the Philly fans.

Of the top 5 D men in the draft he is way at the bottom for me. He is going to be a slightly better Coburn, if that.

I'm tempted to go to it, I've never been to one. But I think I'm gonna head to Xfinity instead. They're having some draft party.

Next year, I will be there though.

I agree there. he needed to acknowledge that return...it would not have detracted from the overall point, imo.

He'll most likely be selected before 4 other d-men are picked and probably before the Flyers step up, but I agree, he's not on my short list either.

I've already come to grips that the Flyers are gonna piss off the fan base by drafting another forward or better yet Samuel Morin.

There is a decent handful that we would be happy with if they are available at #11 & that's not including some possible off the board players.

Bullpoop. I don't care about jam or any of that crap. I care that the team defense was awful, largely because of the system. The gapping between forwards and defensemen kills the transition game and leads to turnover and odd man rushes against and kills their ability to score.

Rather than looking at his roster last October and saying, "Hmmm, not a lot of exceptional puck movers, I better make some changes" He did very little, and it really exposed the team's soft underbelly. When he finally had too many injuries, he changed things up, which improved the team defense and also started showing signs of improving the offense.

Effort wasn't an issue. It was wasted effort.

I'd hate to see Homer pull that "I know more than you" act with the 11th and go off the board for a defenseman.

It's even more fun to hear it repeated over and over by a just-turned-21-year-old woman drunk as all get out -- using a Canadian accent. Because Lavi somehow changed nationalities.
