In the past ten years, the Flyers have won more playoff rounds than anyone not named the Detroit Red Wings.

Sure they make mistakes. So does every team. Sitting around crying about it makes you sound like a whiny jackass.

An older Matt Carle only with better puck carrying, better hands, a better shot, better PP QB ability and somewhat less effective defense. Carle definitely has the edge in the age cateogry.

Streit has only been in the league for 7 years most guys his age are on like 12-14 years

anybody can try, but don't you think a guy like holland or schiarelli would have succeeded?
- isaiah520

Yes...but it's more luck, sometimes. How does anybody know, for example, that longtime European veteran Tim Thomas is a Cup winner, but Roman Cechmanek isn't?

Peter Chiarelli didn't acquire Tuuka Rask...and that's the goalie the Flyers came back on from 3-0 down in 2010. Most guys would never be the same after that. It's a borderline miracle that Rask is getting it done with the same team -- and Chiarelli gets credit for keeping him, but holy hell -- hardly any other team would've done it.

But at the same time, clearly the Bruins didn't know that Thomas was the answer then, either -- otherwise he would've been in the net in 2010! So it's partly luck that Rask blew the 3-0 lead, because he would never have been in the net the next season!

Ken Holland has won cups with Chris Osgood and an ancient Dominik Hasek and Mike Vernon. It is unbelievable to me that he's picked all of those guys at the right time, and those guys have played well enough at the right time, to win ALL THREE. It's a borderline miracle that you pick three random guys and win the Cup!

Holland gets credit for it, and rightly so. But how Chris Osgood, multiple cup winner? OMG! Seriously? It's unbelievable!

true. but still, all things considered, thats still impressive. this isnt the nba where you can put stars together and win ( i think the pens unfortunately showed that this year). in the playoffs, its more about hot streaks for teams, especially goalies, and just plain old breaks and luck.

honestly, a large percentage of what you can ask for as a fan is just continued success and a chance. i realize it sucks being a fan of san jose, and just continuously not seeing your team get over the hump, but still, there is something to be said for continuously being an elite team and making it to the playoffs.

I am more a fan of the Flyers than other Philly teams for two reasons. One, it's hockey. But two, there's never any question about their motives. They are trying to win the Stanley Cup.

They may be guilty of misguided passion, but it's never passion to save a buck or whatever else, it's a passion to win.

It was gut wrenching to watch in the early '90's when he shared the net with Tommy Soderstrom.

exactly. the only two teams i have followed religiously has been the penguins and the phillies, and until recently, that could not always be said about them.
ive always hated the flyers and a lot of their fan base, but for that reason, ive always respected the franchise for that

In terms of defenseman, the Nashville Predators knew exactly what they were getting when they drafted Shea Weber with the 49th pick in the draft, after drafting Konstantin Glazachev with the 35th pick in the same draft.
And Montreal knew they were drafting a potential Norris Trophy level defenseman when they drafted PK Subban with the 43rd pick.
And the Detroit Red Wings absolutely knew they were drafting a defenseman who would arguably become the best defenseman to ever play the game, with the 53rd pick in the NHL Draft. After selecting Mike Sillinger with the 11th pick, and Bob Boughner with the 32nd pick in the same 1989 NHL Draft. All due to their genius scouting. No luck involved at all!

Ah, so you suffer from Ruin Tomorrow Jr's reign of terror, too

But, that's always been the thing with the Flyers...they'd rather go for it. It's laudable, if sometimes dumb

I have to ask, why the pens and phillies? Why not flyers or pirates? And while I'm at it steelers or eagles?

eh. its hard to regret a lot of those moves too much. that team was in such a position to have a span of shots at a WS in a 4 or 5 year span. the team just flat out did not get it done. the losses against the giants and cardinals were killers. they went all in, and now its time to pay the piper. the stars are all old and overpaid, and the farm is pretty barren as a result of the runs. at least they got one out of it, but damn what could have been. should have gotten one more

Exactly -- sometimes, I have looked at the teams that have beaten the Flyers and just laughed, because of how they've done it.

Kimmo Timonen develops a blood clot AND Braydon Coburn gets hit in the eye with a puck, and NEITHER is available for the Eastern Conference final against Pittsburgh a few years back? That's unbelievable! While Drew Doughty plays 55 minutes a night for the L.A. Kings and doesn't miss a shift, let alone develop a blood clot!

It's just unbelievable sometimes, the circumstances surrounding how the Flyers have lost.

well other than going out to school around allentown, ive lived in northeast philadelphia my entire life. the phillies were the first sports team i was really introduced to, the whole little boy and baseball cliche haha but still. i was too young to really comprehend the 93 team, so most of the baseball i watched was pretty horrible, but i guess once you have such an attachment at a young age youre hooked regardless. its crazy that the new success and stadium are awesome, but sometimes i still find myself missing summer days at the vet. i can barely afford tickets now.

i love the game of football, but ive never really latched onto a team for whatever reason.

as far as the pens go, it can basically be summed up by 66. everything about him just seemed larger than life to me when i was younger.

My favorite was the time when Eric Lindros nearly died in a Nashville hotel room bathtub because of a ruptured spleen.

I have never, ever, heard of that happening.

That was just unbelievable. It was. You just sat there and read that and you knew, you just knew, they were never going to win a Cup with him.

You just knew it.

There's a lot of luck involved with drafting. And it's really unbelievable how unlucky the Flyers have been when it comes to drafting defenseman and goaltenders.
