Shooting in the dark here but what would it take for the Sens to get Purcell?
- sensfanpei

I'm not sure he's available unless it's a large overpay. He slots into our top 6 nicely and in the past has shown great chemistry with Marty and Stammer.

you're forgetting that the deal implies that Lecavalier will re-sign with TB at a huge discount. I mean if he doesn't then the deal is 2 2nd/3rd line players, and a couple of top picks for the 3rd overall pick AND Lecavalier.

TB can afford to lose the 3rd overall pick if they shed that much salary and get a decent package of players to help now and picks to use later. I may not be preferred but options are slim. Think about now people thought Chicago would be screwed when they gave up Ladd, Byfuglien, & Versteeg for virtually nothing. It seemed to work for them.

But you're also asking us to take back middle-roster players with significant cap hits. So, if the team were to re-sign Lecavalier, the dollar difference would be near nothing. Giving up the third overall pick in that situation just doesn't make any sense.

Leafs fans just like dreaming up scenarios where they bully everyone in the league and can do whatever they want. They aren't the Yankees. And I don't know where they get that the Lightning is "bleeding money"... Did we sellout every game this year? Tampa is 8th in total attendance this year. Attendance has been getting better every year since the Cowboys sold to Vinik. The 2 years after the lockout, they had better attendance than the Leafs!! No, really, look it up. The lightning have a good following here and it is only getting better every year. Contrary to Canadian reports, hockey in Tampa is thriving. Ever since Vinik came in, they've been spending on players so it's not like they're on the salary floor. This is a smarter organization that is building for a long run at playoff/cup contention, not only for the following year. The #3 pick isn't going anywhere. Vinny isn't going anywhere. Lightning will be serious Cup contenders by 2014-15.

To be fair, the team is losing money. The difference now is that we have an owner who is committed for the long-haul. He was asked (by the Times, if I recall) how long he plans on owning the team, and he said until the day he dies. He's willing to spend. We're not a salary floor team. We're a salary cap team. Hockey is thriving, and I'm so happy to be a small part of the big Lightning family.

According to Forbes, only 3 teams are making money: Montreal, Toronto, and NYR. So why isn't every team folding? It's most likely because they are making money but showing a loss. Its just business.

The commonly held belief is that the Lightning doesn't break even on an annual basis. That being said, with solid ownership in play, my feeling is that the Lightning is one of the more solid sunny franchises.

Honestly it's tough to come up with a price simply b/c we don't "need" prospects. Our prospect pipeline is already full (thus Conacher was available in the Bishop deal), and given that in this scenario we would be dealing a player from the NHL it would have to be NHL ready player(s) coming back. That being said our only "hole" right now is on defense so it would have to be a young d-man ready to step in.

I'm not sure I'd be trading Purcell until I'm sure that at least a couple of the young guns are ready for top-six duty.

I think it's a solid signing. It comes with no drawbacks, and there's certainly a lot of upside there.

That's giving up way too much for Karlsson in my opinion.

Norris winning D-men don't come cheap.

EDIT - In no way am I saying he's available. He's as close to untouchable as a player can be.

There is ALOT of talk with the new Penguins blogger and there fans about moving Letang. Would that be worth our 3rd overall?

Maybe. If they shoot something else still us along with letang I have a hard time not considering that.... He is extremely solid and let's not forget with all this hype about a top 3 pick and having the chance to put someone with stammer for years to come that our #1 need is clearly a letang type guy back on defense

Not without an extension already agreed to. Letang is a FA after next season so one year of Letang is not worth the #3.

With an extension, Letang is worth more than the third overall pick. Without one, he's worth less.

He won't exactly solve our defensive issues (the guy is all offense), but he'd certainly be a huge upgrade back there.
