Just remember, there's no guarantee he signs
- NYI44

I'd be very surprised if we didn't get him signed. The whole Hamhuis thing was a mess last year, but it doesn't sound like Streit is dead set against playing here... I suspect it'll get done.

Streit is a small defenseman who is not going to fix your D corps.

He is going to sign an over 35 contract which has its own issues.

He is a -41 the last two years (even with the shortened season) and has only been a plus player once (+6) in his 9 year NHL career.

- Downeaster

Doesn't answer the question I posed to the Devils fan. How does going after Streit mean that our GMs are stuck in the 70's? Was it trendy to sign small dmen who weren't good defensively back then? Does Streit like disco and wear bell bottoms?

believe me and hopefully youll understand why firsthand, not many islander fans are crying over mark streit not being an islander...

How in God's name was this guy your captain if he was such a horrible player and not liked by fans or the organization?

Can he move the puck? I don't expect him to be any more than a 3/4 dman on the team next year.

No offence to your team, but just bc he wanted those years and terms to sign with long island, doesnt mean he going to demand the same thing from another team. Maybe he felt like he should earn more than Vishnovsky and be the number 1 paid dman on your team, so he is askign that.

He could easily sign for less with the Flyers for whatever reason. Maybe he likes the city and the idea of playing with Timonen or Laviolette, whatever it may be.

as crazy as it sounds, he was made captain by default, the only other option was obviously JT but he was too young and not developed (although people would have been fine with that)...streit was experienced, the vet on the team, and one of the longest tenured players at the time. after that, while it was obvious JT was/is the leader they werent going to strip him of the captaincy with 1 year left on his deal

3/4 is asking alot.

hamonic and amac were the isles #1 line, so at best streit was the 4/5/6 best dman on the team (lubomir is significantly better than streit) and he was still disappointing.

it sounds like im being bitter but seriously, look back at the trade deadline, i wanted him gone...and by trade deadline i mean LAST YEARS trade deadline.

He was our Captain because before JT arrived he was our best player hands down... Since the 1st season with us he has been on a decline but it has really shown over the last 2 seasons... He is also well-liked and respected by all. He is a class act but he is asking for way to much money for what he brings to the table. He constantly gets beat by just skating around him and even tho his strength is on the PP, you will notice that he gets very lazy on it. As for him playing as a 3/4 dman on the Flyers, he still might be out of position there.

I hope he proves us all wrong and I hope he has a few more great seasons with you guys but I just dont see it.

100% true...but we can all agree he wont be getting less than $4 a year (and yes even that is low) and that would be major overpayment.

whats funny about this situation is that the ball is in streits court; all he has to do is listen to the flyers offer and then if he isnt blown away (which is what it will take to get him to sign with the flyers and bypass free agency) hell just test the market at that point and negotiate with every other team in the nhl.

I find it funny that he went through all the bad with the Isles through the rebuild process and now they're finally good and he leaves.

He wont get less than 4, I think 4.5 will what he will have to settle at, bc teams wont be lining up the door to sign him at 5+. I know I wouldnt want him on the Avs for that price, but I would like his services to try and teach the young kids how to run a power play

I honestly think his ego got into his demands, wanted to be the highest paid dman on your team and didnt watn to make less than JT if he is the captain.

no one said he was unliked or horrible

He is in the downswing of his career, we have seen it over the last 2 years... he is no longer a top 4 D-men but he wants to be signed like a top 2. This is our problem with him, if we could sign him for 2 years 2.5-3 mill a season tops, im sure we would have for his PP ability, leadership and he was VERY liked in the locker room. But moving forward, we have the O that he brings and we NEED guys on our back end that can play D. so for 5-6 mill a season over a multi-year deal.... no thank you.. have a good day sir, nice knowing you, appreciate what you brought, good luck in your next endeavor.
So if you are expecting him to just come in and help your PP he will do that, If you are expecting him to be a leader and mentor.. you got a great guy... but if you are expecting a d-men that can play D..... not gonna happen.

I believe you all that you wanted him gone but it just sounds a bit weird that he was captain with this many issues. I don't expect more from him than before but I think if he's slotted correctly he can help us out. We have a forward corps that couldn't get any sustained attack because no one could move the puck to them.. Huge issue with Lavi's system.

Streit was very well liked and respected..... Was never a horrible player, just think what us islander fans are trying to say is that since his injury, he has regressed his play and wasn't the same player before. And bc he is a FA and demanding over $5m a yr is not worth it for the islanders...

wish Streit the best of luck, and hope it works out for you guys......

I know it's not malicious but it did sound weird to me that he was the captain yet lazy, beyond horrible defensively and no real redeeming qualities except a good shot.

I wanted to trade him at the deadline in any deal that would of helped the Isles... But I also wanted to resign him but only for the right price. What he is asking is nuts...

He will def help the Flyers and he def moves the puck very well but just expect him to get beat a few times a game, make a few dumb passes and he gets really lazy (or slow) on the powerplay.

at the end of last year it was obvious to everyone that his skills were sub-captain level but the isles had no intentions of stripping him of the captaincy with just 1 year left. it would have hurt any negotiating leverage they had during the deadline and quite frankly it would be mean and unnecessary. everyone on the team knows its JTs team, including streit.

See our record from 2007-2012. There's your answer. Steit was an unaccomplished dman that we overpaid to bring in at a time where no one else would play here. He was very effective over his first couple of years but as our level of talent increased, it became more apparent that Streit's lofty esteem in which he was held, was more to the lack of decent talent around him.

Frankly, he wasn't the Captain type and a few of us have been asking for him to lose that status for a couple of years now.
