And have been ridiculed, Crosby outperforming Krejci in the semi's because Fenwick numbers said so, yeah that is totally reliable.

With all data, you want a large sample size, ideally not just four games.

Corsi and Fenwick have no relevance in Hockey, the game is played on the ice and decided on the ice, a lucky bounce, a penalty can decide a game and those stats (Corsi and Fenwick) cannot differentiate between unforeseen circumstances, thus it is a useless stats.

this is the type of response I get when explain to my grandmother why I text instead of picking up the phone and calling the person.

I know that we leave no stone unturned here, but honestly, I'm concerned about #1 centre and a guy to pair with Phaneuf.

Possibly replacing Leo Komarov? My thoughts on that one can wait until training camp.

- Atomic Wedgie

Yeah i suppose but the blog was on Komorov. Plus, i'm hoping Kadri might fill one of those holes. But, we have to wait to see if he does or not.

There's only 1 way to look at it. Because of salary cap issues, they had to replace about half a dozen non-core roster players. Some (Niemi, Ladd, Byf) very significant contributors. They never missed the playoffs, and are now back in the Finals three years later. There's just no way to compare that to losing Leo Komarov, not even close.
- 1979AD

3 years before the won a playoff round. 3 years is a long period of time, and this team is a significant upgrade from the Leafs. sorry to say ladd and buff were only periodically top 6ers, how they turned out doesn't change what they were at the time. Buff was used like Bickell. is he a top 6 player?

Isn't Alex Steen technically the best player in the NHL per Fenwick and Mason Raymond the best defensive forward in the league per Corsi (2012)?

I guess that's a personal choice, but why are NHL organizations using them then?

I'm really not sure, just making the point that the larger your sample size the more reliable your data is.

You also have to take into account those players usage and quality of competition.

Perfectly accurate, no wonder these supposedly NHL teams are using such reliable stats to improve their teams, just look at the results, clear as day.

If the Leafs were losing Komarov, Frattin, McClement, and Orr your argument might be applicable.

And winning the cup, then losing in the first round for two years before making the cup finals again isn't the saddest story I've ever heard.

I'm still going to go with "no."

How about, "if the Leafs had won the Stanley Cup this year and then lost Komarov, Frattin, McClement and Orr..."

"If you rely solely [on analytics], you do it at your own peril," says MacTavish, who played 1,093 NHL games. "Nobody's figured out a fail-safe method, not in baseball, football, hockey or soccer. But you're foolish not to be [looking at them], either."

MAC T approved.

btw, here is some light reading.

Fair enough - that's why I said 'might'. It's just kind of fun that he's sticking with the "Leafs are in big trouble if they lose Komarov - just look at what happened to Chicago" argument.
