"inventing?" They are widely used statistical measures, they are just new to this websites community it seems.
Statistics or not, getting outshot and not having the puck are hardly recipes for success, wouldn't you agree? - Talkshowhost
The one stat that seems to matter the most to a team's success in each game that I've watched over the years has been goal differential. I've noticed that they award teams with more goals than their opponent with extra points and that seems to help improve their position in the standings. It has an uncanny correlation to Wins vs Losses. Check it out some time - it will blow your mind.
I believe the top 5 possession teams this season were Chi, LA, Pitts, Bos and NJ. The 4 conference finalist plus NJ. Probably not a coincidence. - senstroll
Mhmm, There have been some really good posts about it as of late.

I would suggest reading about the advanced stats stuff, it's really quite good. Surely shot differential isn't too complicated.

took em about a half season to recover, they played terrible out of the gate and didn't show well in the playoffs, but you can look at it that way if you would like. - Jay Uller
There's only 1 way to look at it. Because of salary cap issues, they had to replace about half a dozen non-core roster players. Some (Niemi, Ladd, Byf) very significant contributors. They never missed the playoffs, and are now back in the Finals three years later. There's just no way to compare that to losing Leo Komarov, not even close.

The thing is, it is not difficult to simply take a look at the rosters of those teams and make a pretty good prediction that they would be the best teams in the league.
Also, outliers like NJ, ANA and TOR call the whole thing into serious question.
Fenwick supporters have actually claimed that they knew all along Boston would win... even when it was 4-1 Leafs with 10 minutes left. They think that Fenwick won out... instead of, you know, an inexperienced team choking and referees putting away the whistles like they always do.

But you don't think taking more shots is better than giving up more shots? - Talkshowhost
If you ask me whether peppering Anderson with 50 shots from the perimeter that he easily saves is better than taking 21 shots with 5 of them going in....

If you're going to pick a scene from that movie, the Car's Moving In Stereo plays while a red bikini Phoebe Cates walks slowly out of the pool. - LeafMan

The Canucks had 3 of the leagues top 5 goalies last year.
Teams like Nashville, Montreal, Boston, NYR, LA, Buffalo, Ott, Toronto, CBJ, were all unfortunate to have only 1 of the top-5 goalies each. - Aetherial
I hope the Leafs get one of the 20 top 5 goalies one day.

I don't think anyone is though. Some of us are saying losing Komorov is going to hurt the Leafs. Obviously Ladd is better, but obviously he's not playing bottom 6 anymore. I think what Kulimen, Frattin, McClement and Komorov brought/bring to the Leafs is rather underated. As was having a decent bottom 2 pairing D for the first time in a while in Franson and Fraser.
