The last 4 or 5 years of drafting have been terrible.... We only have Hall, Eberle, RNH, Yakupov and PRV to show for it.

to be fair, 3 of those 5 were no brainers/1st overalls

Not at all. Big fan of Big Joe. He’s one guy that I don’t think earned his playoff no-show reputation. He’s been a point per game for most years. His last year in Boston, he got a bum rap. He had broken ribs, FFS. The Sharks have also done reasonably well with him. Just not the cup.

He'd be perfect to centre Kessel and Lupul too.

- Dirte

Sharks main problem in the playoffs have always been depth and not the Top 6. Previous to this years playoffs they couldn't rely on the bottom 6 and overworked the Top 6. This year they got better play from the bottom 6 in terms of giving them minutes but again they didn't help take the pressure off the top 6 but chipping in a goal here or there. Thornton had his best games in these playoffs but I think he may be too old for when the Leafs could really use him. If it was a few years ago then I would've been sure.

Why? The 7th this year will be a better player than Couts in 2 yrs....
- Iggysbff

Well first, I think it's debatable whether a) that's consensus and b) whether Philly believes it. They seem to like Couts.

I think the other thing is, why would they trade in the work they've done grooming Couturier to start all over with a prospect that might be there at 11th anyway? How attached are they to nabbing two prospects in this draft? Even the prospect does outstrip not only what Couts is but also what he'll become, is the worth of that player going to be so much higher than Couturier that it's worth waiting 2+ years for it to come to fruition?

these are all factors. And as far as us trading with them is concerned, we're the team that has a 1C on the shelf, 2C in contract negotiations, and 3C and 4C set to be bought out/traded. They're doing us more of a favour than we're doing them by trading Couturier for a 7th alone.

We can agree to disagree though.

Those were no brainers?? I feel we made good choices with each pick, but tough to call them no brainers when the Oilers got scrutinized for taking the wrong guy every step of the way.

His age is a fair point. I guess I've been asked the question so many times over the years, and given that answer so many times, it might be getting a bit "dated".

He would've been the perfect Center for Kessel/Lupul. He can create space and works along the boards. Only issue is Kessel/Lupul would need to learn how to take a faceoff because Thornton likes to cheat a lot and gets kicked out often. Thats what you have to do to win a lot face offs.

Just jokin. 2 years of development time is definitely worth something. And as you say....we would not be trading from a position of strength as we desperately need a 3 C if we get rid of Horcs...

He may tame that down a little on his own without Marleau on his wing.

I wouldn't be interested in adding too much more...it's not like we couldn't use a guy like Nurse ourselves.

Only problem is Nurse would likely be 2-3 years away from being on the roster. We need an improvement to the top 4 now....

I never said another high value asset, but again I don't think Couts is being shopped. to pry him out of Philadelphia onto a team with no NHL centres ready for November, we'd need to add a bit.

I'd trade the 7th in a package to get such help, but the worst thing we could do was draft a player and try to rush him.

Malkin UFA in a year, Martin overpaid and UFA in 2 years.

Sorry dude I just thought malkin away from Crosby that he would show the world that he's number 1, plus bennett could turn out well for us and Martin is a pretty good d man.

Isn't this the guy who always comes in bashing Clouts proposals?

Pens give up Fleury and Orpik and get a 37th and Bernier, a player who's performed better than Fleury for cheaper?

Oilers give up the 37th, Dubnyk and MPS and get Fleury (pedigree aside has performed WORSE than Dubnyk of late for more expensive) and one year of a defensive dmen when we have two similar types already on the roster?

To bring back an old ChrisMS chestnut, "it has to work for both sides".

We also lose our first RWer, our best prospect, and ways to get other prospects
