woah you just took this to another level
staal isn't overrated. he's a 26 year old defenseman who's already been an allstar. hamhuis is 30 and has never been an allstar.
staal has been adding offense consistently for the past couple seasons and was on pace to score over 40 points had he played 82 games.
staal is a #1 dman and is better than all the players you listed; he also averages over 24 minutes a game.
the vision and the chance he might leave to go to carolina as a UFA are the only legitimate arguments you have about his value not equaling edler's. but that can be fixed with a pick or a prospect.

His offence stinks.
The only "All Star" team that matters in the first and second at the end of the season. Which he has never been on.
He now has a serious eye injury.
He is not a #1 defenceman. You can argue he is one half of a top pair but a #1 defenceman is one of the absolute best in the league. There are probably only like 5 legitimate #1's in the league followed by a bunch of wingers on defence and a handful of pretenders.
(frank) cares about on pace. Robbie Schremp was on pace to be a 60 pt player in Edmonton one year. Alex Burrows started the year on pace for like 5 goals. Hossa and Toews and Kane all started the year on pace for like 80 pts in a short season.
But yeah, forgetting all that. The fact he could quite easily just bounce in like a year when Eddy is on a long term deal at a nice comfy cap hit would totally make it worth it for some "prospect or pick"
