The way to get Briere to waive that NTC is to say, we ARENT buying you out, but we will expect you to be a limited player, 3rd line, learn to check, no PP time. Then he might want out.
- youarewrong

The almost have to buy out Briere if they want other players. No team would trade for that contract now anyway.

We should already be talking about a new coach. Let the GM have another year or 2.

I agree that any player can have a bad stretch, and Pitt as a whole - mostly thanks to Boston - had a real bad stretch of games. And perhaps the reason for zero points over 4 games is just that simple.

I would argue that a concussion (from a relatively innocent-looking hit) that keeps a player out of the game for 10 months can in no way be blown out of proportion.

- wolfhounds

It wasn't just a concussion though. The doctor missed a neck issue that caused concussion like symptoms. It's possible he never received a second concussion.

I think the organization has more respect for Briere than to try something like that.
- johndewar

It doesnt have to be like that. They can sit him down and say: "Danny, we are buying out Bryz so we have the money to keep you. We can't afford to let a player of your ability just walk for nothing. However, given what has happened the last few seasons we are going to ask you to take on a different role this year. We want you to work with our younger players to make them better. I'm sorry we cant promise you PP time or a lot of ice time, but your leadership will be valued. We do understand though if this isnt enough for you. If you would like a trade, we can see what we can do."

Yep -- I don't think he worries about it every day, but I think everybody in that organization knows that you don't get to miss two years in a row.

They miss this year, the housecleaning will be so thorough, I don't think Skate Zone employees will be safe.

Yeah, they'd only go as far as that system could carry them, grinding the opposition into the ground. Without that system, without a lot of the players that made it successful (Prust, Dubinsky, Fedotenko, Rupp, Sauer), without the coach that defined them as a group, I don't know where that leaves them.
- Tomahawk

At the beginning of the year, I said losing that grit and depth would hurt and it did. Once they lost that, their D came back to Earth and star players were at odds with the coach, the season was pretty much over for them

That being said, I think they have a good frame work for the future if they tweak some things. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Del Zotto. He's bipolar as a player to say the least.

Monday or not, I was drafted by the Flyers in the 3rd round and this is as good as it gets for me.

Now, about my signing bonus...

I think the biggest misconception about Briere is that he is still good.

The actual monetary value of the remaining contract is quite reasonable. It is the cap hit that would probably be the issue for any team trading for him...unless it is a team that needs to get to the floor......And even then, would that be a team that Briere was willing to go to......

So many factors...

If we get Byfuglien when can finally work one of the best Star Wars' quotes into this board:

Offensively, last year's Flyers lived and died on the PP.
Secondary scoring and better 5 on 5 play is a must or they'll be golfing and we'll be talking about 18 year old kids none of have seen play for another spring/summer.

I'd rather just avoid the circle jerk. 48 hours after Bettman hands the Cup off to a sweaty team captain, hand both Bryz and Briere their walking papers

That's the go to excuse now. I'm stunned that teams keep running that out. Maybe things they do to the neck relieve concussion symptoms but I doubt they cause them.
