T.O doesn't care what Gillis has to say just look at the mess he created - Reimer did well with only being paid a fraction of your #1 chock artist. Eakins wouldn't have signed in Vancouver because it's a disaster in the making more than 10 guys unsigned already at the cap. Eakins is not a stupid man he told the Leafs he wanted to be an NHL coach and they gave permission to any team.
My guess your going to get a lame duck dude to coach in Vancouver someone Gillis can blame when they mess up again.
I'm glad my team doesn't define itself on a team on the other side of the continent they have there own issues to deal with ie., more than 10 million below the cap 0 bad contracts with two years to buy out anyone or take on a bad contract to buyout so they could get a quality player in the mix.
I think Gillis and the Nucks feel the pinch of being offered 2 second round picks and a backup goalie who's paid under 700k. That my friends will be the best offer Vancouver gets for Luongo he's been toiled around since last season he has confidence issues and while he could have been moved somehow he wasn't and in a few weeks the Vancouver fire sale will begin in earnest. I say 5 roster players from last year are gone for chump change picks.
But then again those of you who envy Toronto because the GTA has more people than all the provinces from Manitoba to BC because lets face it it's a good place to be.... We don't care if you interview whomever it just shows that Vancouver realizes where the quality is. it's certainly not from your development system. - Snowmanonfire
That sure is a lot of typing for someone who doesn't care. |

My point was they're not going to fire Gillis if they don't accept his plan. They're going to rework it.

They might. They might not. Way too much of a hypothetical to argue (accurately anyways).
But the length of time left on Gillis' contract would not be a determining factor. You're talking about billionaires and the operation of their hockey team worth in excess of $200M. The instant they don't trust Gillis to run things any more he will be fired, regardless of how much time he has left on his contract. |

You’re joking right? No bad contracts? Ever heard of Mike Komisarek? Phaneuf may be a good dman, but he’s not $6.5M good. Unless Liles finally can bounce back from his mushy head, that’s not a very good contract either. |

Pretty funny since ian wanted him to coach vancouver. Your a sad man. you did not get what you wanted so you spin the story. Grow up clown. Typical. |

I agree. But I think there's a major difference between not trusting one of your employees to run a huge portion of your business versus not liking the idea he/she proposed and tweaking it a little bit.
It doesn't have to mean immediate dismissal if the ownership group doesn't like your proposal of having a sleep doctor.

So less than one month from the deepest draft in years Mikey Gillis is spending time interviewing a coach he has no intention of hiring?
And this is to spite Toronto? I assume because they didn't give him everything he wanted for Luongo.
Hard to believe an NHL GM would do this but I guess Gillis would be the man. Professional and classy as always.
The Oilers looked to have added some decisiveness in the FO. Something many could use including the Hawks. |

You’re the second person to say that. I don’t see what you guys have found particularly pissy or “emotional” (I think that’s what the other poster said). The guy who wrote that whole diatribe is the only thing I’ve seen. And that wasn’t exactly what I would call a logical post anyway. |

That may be so, but as of right now, they still have some bad contracts on the books. And while Komi’s contract is abysmal, and he’ll almost certainly be bought out, I’m not so sure Liles won’t be given another year to see if he can bounce back. When playing at his best, he’s probably worth $4M. They can always use the compliance buyout next year, if he continues to play like crap. |

Since when does booking an interview = intent to hire? It's step 1 in a discovery process to gauge compatibility... If he hadn't interviewed Eakins, he wouldn't have been doing his job. It doesn't take a hockey genius to know that a mutual fit wasn't likely, but due diligence was necessary to confirm that fact. |

He did need permission. Eakins was still T.O's property - Ihatebrianburke
No he didn't, he had a clause in his contract allowing him to talk to teams at the end of the season... |

From what I understand, he had a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave at the end of the season, but teams still had to ask for permission to speak with him.
NYR, Dallas, Vancouver and the Oilers all asked for permission first.

My understanding is that it was merely a courtesy. They did not actually need permission.... |

If so, that kind of shoots a hole in the theory that he was doing it to piss off the Leafs, wouldn’t you say? Unless he’s very politely trying to piss them off? |

Compared to who? Burke? Tambellini? Mac-T?
If only Gillis spent as much time worrying about classiness as those GMs... |

WHAT? I think you need some lessons in research!!!
GTA = just over 6 million
B.C. = 4.6 million
Alberta = 3.9 million
Sask = 1 million
Manitoba = 1.2 million
Total = 10.7 million vs 6 million |
