God I hope not.
That's setting the bar real low for your expectations. To still live on memories of your team from when you were a kid is already a bit long in the tooth. - AlexF
Yah it's kind of funny the Canes and Lightning fans aren't still riding their Cup wins, but Oilers and Leafs fans are.
do we get to still brag about the back-to-back Prezs' in 2047? |

I'm sure that has more to do with the paycheck the guy is getting than who he is hiring.
"I'm hiring X coach for 3 years at 1 million per."
"Why is this guy worth a million?"
"Well he's the best guy to run our team."
"Do you think he'd sign for 850 per?"
"No he asked for a million and there is a chance he'll not take 850 while there are other jobs out there."
"Okay, get the deal done." - IanEsplen
Or maybe something like this:
"I'm hiring X coach for 3 years at 1 million per."
"Oh. So Mark Messier isn't available anymore?"
"No, he wants to stay in New York still."
"Okay, get the deal done." |

Tell that to fans of the Boston Red Sox who waited 86 freaken years. - Phratz
Now that was a dramatic victory if I ever heard of one. And I don't even follow baseball. |

The only people who have a problem with the 4pm starts when the Leafs come to town are the Vancouver sports media because it gives them something to complain about. 4pm starts every now and then are great, especially for families and kids. - KB3Point0
Yah I used to love those 1:00pm starts.

They Should bring in Mario Tremblay, he's francophone and will be able to resolve any goalie issues.

I think Gillis and Gilman have probably already discussed the list of candidates they they're going to interview and Aquilini probably gave his two cents on the list but ultimately it has to be the call of the guys interviewing. - Nucker101
I don't think Aquilini gets involved on much more than the money side when it comes to coaches. That's why he has Gillis. Aquilini's got a tonne of stuff on the go, and scouting coaches isn't one of them. |

I imagine Gillis does the interviewing and all the prerequisite stuff, but nobody gets hired until he's had a sit down with the Aquaman and gets the ultimate stamp of approval. |

Nowhere really. Just a NYR fan's wet dream to get a Messier-Gretzky GM-Coach partnership. Will likely end badly though. |

Never IMO...all teams that have won should always be proud of what's been accomplished in the past. It may not be relevant to what's happening today, but it's still part of their storied history. - LeftCoaster
But that's what I'm asking. Not suggesting they should stop being proud of the accomplishments of 20 - 30 years ago, but at some point the "winning history" gets overtaken by 20+ years of being a small market team with a history of not winning.
As an example, there are lots of reasons a coach might take a job with the Leafs (money, the challenge, big market, Original 6, etc.) but it would be hard to argue that anyone would take a job as the coach of the Leafs due to their "history of winning." |

What does Aquilini know about coaching that he's actually going to sit down and interview a head coach? Aquilini hires the President / GM to run the team for him. If he doesn't trust Gillis to hire the coach then he would just fire him and get someone he does trust. |

No coach in their right mind would currently choose to go to either Edmonton or Toronto for their "winning history". There are a multitude of other reasons to go, but that's not one of them! |

He was apparently the greatest communicator/leader in sports history. Because of that the media figure if you hire X and O guys that know what they are doing he'd be an awesome coach.
And there are Rumours he wants to give it a try. |

I can't see Gillis being a "puppet GM". He has the final say on all hockey decissions. He just needs to make sure Aquaman is okay cutting the cheque. |
