Owners hire GMs, GMs hire coaches...that generally how it works.

the difference is there is a different guy doing the hiring.

- IanEsplen

Generally. But why did Gillis say he doesn't make a decision without consulting with owners first?

Rich! A Leaf fan mocking another organization.
- paulr

I don't think he's mocking the organization. I think he was mocking that comment. The Canucks are probably worth several times that.

Here's a good quote and article about Aquilini from April. The whole article isn't about his Canucks affilation, but this little snippet makes it seem like Gillis can't sneeze without consulting Aquilini first.

Luongo’s name flashes across the screen. His phone rings. “It’s Mike (Gillis),” he says, unfolds like a long measuring stick and slips out the door.

When he gets back, he shrugs it off. “Champagne problems, that’s what I call it. Too many good players.”

The media pisses him off. Too eastern based. “We’ve got the best team in the country and all they talk about is Leafs, Leafs, Leafs.”

Okay, first things first, you haven't beaten Vancouver until, at the very least make the playoffs. So don't get too far ahead of yourselves.

You don't get too far ahead of yourself

I dont see the Canucks on there anywhere, I do see Oilers though, multiple times..

I have no idea what the fuss is all about a guy who has never coached an NHL game in his life. GUY BOUCHER GUY BOUCHER GUY BOUCHER . Remember when he was the flavour of the month ? How is his NHL career?

Give me Laviolette

I'm sure that has more to do with the paycheck the guy is getting than who he is hiring.

"I'm hiring X coach for 3 years at 1 million per."

"Why is this guy worth a million?"

"Well he's the best guy to run our team."

"Do you think he'd sign for 850 per?"

"No he asked for a million and there is a chance he'll not take 850 while there are other jobs out there."

"Okay, get the deal done."

Hard to argue with that, Ontario has twice the population of BC so it makes sense.

Vancouver fans are hilarious. On here and over at HF Boards they kept saying Gillis better hurry up and sign this guy before someone else does.

Now someone has beaten Gillis to Eakins and some fans are saying say we didn't want him anyways.

If i was Eakins, I would have chosen Edmonton too. Much better culture, a team on the upswing versus on the downswing, a new building on the way, and a history of winning that Vancouver can only dream of.

Overall, a good decision and much better fit for Eakins personally. I don't envy the next coach of the Canucks, he'll be at the helm of a sinking ship.

- Phratz

How long do we have to wait before a team's "history of winning" becomes invalidated? It's been over 20 years! Do the Leafs have a "history of winning" too?

Maybe so. But I think it's a combination of both. Gillis and Co. have gone on record saying this is the most important move their administration will make in their 5 years of being here. There's no way Aquaman won't have a say on who will be the face of his hockey empire.

I don't think it ever becomes invalidated. As a Canucks fan, when and if Vancouver wins, you can be damn sure i'll ride that Cup wave well into my 80's and 90's and then eventually on to my kids when I'm dead and gone.

I think Gillis and Gilman have probably already discussed the list of candidates they they're going to interview and Aquilini probably gave his two cents on the list but ultimately it has to be the call of the guys interviewing.

Dallas Eakins in Vancouver would have been a disaster , they need a proven nhl coach ... And one who isn't defense first . Eakins will help the oilers kids play better defensively but he has an expiry date and eventually they will make the playoffs and lose in round one a few times then fire Eakins

Never IMO...all teams that have won should always be proud of what's been accomplished in the past. It may not be relevant to what's happening today, but it's still part of their storied history.

1 - I see your point, but in his end of the year presser, Gillis said he doesn't make a decision without running it by the owners so....

2- If you want a good lawyer, hire a kid right out of law school, he or she has something to prove. I prefer to take the gawker.com approach to hiring...inexperience required.

- Phratz

Well that's ridiculous! There's something to be said for experience. Ask OJ. If he'd hired a "kid right out of law school" he'd be in jail for murdering his ex-wife instead of... where is OJ these days?

God I hope not.

That's setting the bar real low for your expectations. To still live on memories of your team from when you were a kid is already a bit long in the tooth.

The only people who have a problem with the 4pm starts when the Leafs come to town are the Vancouver sports media because it gives them something to complain about. 4pm starts every now and then are great, especially for families and kids.
