Just a guess, but I am thinking they would need to get permission from the Sabres, since even though they fired him, they are still paying his contract. If he does get hired, then they would no longer have to pay him. Any team that wouldn't grant permission to a fired coach would be pretty big Richard's about it. Again, just a guess.

Read the article, it says exactly that. They also needed permission from Vancouver to speak with Vigneault as well as Toronto for Eakins (but EDM got him first)

I know that in other professional leagues it is that if a coach gets hired while still getting paid by another team... the salaries have to cross each other..

So for instance... if Ruff gets 5M per year from us... and the Rangers sign him to a 2M per year deal... we only have to pay him 3M so that he still makes the same amount. This is what I know from NCAA Football and NBA at least.
