it's a 1 year stop gap who cares? who are we going to use that cap space for this off season?

And if he gets hurt and they can't buy him out?

i could give 2 craps is he's happy or not and he's only there for 1 more season while we retool and see how the dozens of goalies we signed for the minors work out also buy another year for mason to see if he can regain form
- 2Real

No point in keeping him around. You pretty much feel the same way by basically using him for one more season.

Not worth the risk.

It's not like they're the Florida panthers. They've missed the playoffs like 6 times in 40 years and made it to the finals an equal amount of times. Some very bad luck like losing two hall of fame goalies to either injury or fatal car crash hasn't helped. One thing is for certain the flyers don't take we'll to losing, so whatever's being said publicly you better be damn sure they're burning midnight oil by the barrel to get it right.

We will see.

Again though, a lot of us younger crew, dont have those glory years to look back on. For someone that has been a fan since 1997 (year I moved to Canada), I have a slightly different outlook.

I hope they get it right, but part of me believes a lot of the issues fall on Snider, and upper management. Who knows. Im still a fan, and a big one, but I dont have as much faith.

What's the point in keeping him one year? If he gets hurt your stuck with that contract. Why keep him for one more season as back up just to buy him out? The Flyers don't have the luxury in cap space to keep a $5M+ cap hit on the bench opening the door.

Yeah, except he's going to play at least a few games if he stays as backup. Not worth the risk

Know what is sickening?

If they do buy him out, how much money does he get for basically doing nothing?

In today's world, and so many people struggling, that is such a joke.

Honestly, all of these players are being paid from Billionaires who keep making money. Those owners aren't average joe's so while it seems like a lot of money to spend on nothing somehow they find another way to make money. Besides they get to spread it out over time and the contract isn't paid in full. I rather have that then a goalie who is average to below average and paying him in full. Then again its not my money though.

Read's cap number isn't going to be a bargain anymore after this year. I love the kid and I agree he should be fine. I wouldn't be disappointed if he was traded to get Bernier though. I prefer they use him to get Yandle or Edler but I can understand the move for Bernier if they buyout Bryz.
- stveshdy

I really like Matt Read but I would trade him straight up for Bernier in a heartbeat. Sure it is a bit of a gamble but Bernier is a young goaltender waiting for prime time. It is time for the flyers to get a young stud goalie and use him, unlike the way they treated my Bob, who they should never have given up on. Remember how pizzed off I was when they used Leighton instead of Bob. The way the flyers were playing team defence at that time two goalies in net at the same time would not have changed the results.

I can't blame the players in this situation. The league opted to change the rules drastically on long-term contracts to the detriment of those organizations. Only the NHL (Bettman) would come up with such an idea. Some players now get to double dip, I blame ownership on this one.

Besides those they could make a trade, or see who somebody else uses a compliance buyout on.

Exactly.

Cap recapture, at his age, means they don't really have a choice.

The risk vs. the reward -- $5.66 million per season of cap hit for the next five years, six if you count next year...plus the recapture if he retires?

The only thing worse than the deal itself is not using the compliance buyout that is available to you. The concept of compounding the problem is in play here; what's the first thing you do when you realize you are in a hole?

Stop digging.

I don't know that Steve Mason is the answer. But that's no different than any nearly every other team in the league. There are only a few goalies who inspire confidence consistently. Mike Smith went from outcast in Tampa Bay to savior in Phoenix.

Which one is he, really?

He's somewhere in between, like 95 percent of the goalies who have ever started in the league, including Ilya Bryzgalov...which is why I don't worry about replacing him. The next guy is going to be roughly the same, and that only changes when you land a guy like Patrick Roy or Martin Brodeur or Henrik Lundqvist -- and that only happens every decade or so.

I wouldn't trade either. Use the guys you currently have or find a way to upgrade moving Read or Hartnell. That's just me but I want to keep the young core together.

It still a hell of a core even when you subtract one of those guys. Someone has to go to address the D. Ideally I'd say Hartnell, but I dont think they'll be shopping him.
