I heard once about a dude who's wife left him for another man. For the sake of the kids he let her keep the house to live in with her new fella, under the condition that he got to move into the basement. That is a man with no self respect.

OMG... poor guy... That would be worse than having to move back home with your parents IMO...

Nobody can swap players like Slats. Aside from blowing up the dynasty in the early nineties mainly for financial reasons, has he ever lost a pure hockey trade?

-Esa Tikkanen for Doug Weight
-Craig MacTavish for Todd Marchant
-Two 1st round picks (Marty Reasoner and Matt Zultek) for Curtis Joseph and Mike Grier
-Dan McGillis for Janne Ninnimaa
-Boris Mironov,Jonas Elofson and Dean McAmmond for Dan Cleary,Ethan Moreau and Chad Kilger
Jason Bonsignore,Steve Kelly and Bryan Marchment for Paul Comrie and Roman Hamrlik
-Jason Arnott and Bryan Muir For Bill Guerin and Valeri Zelepukin
-Mats Lingren and an 8th (Radek Martinek) for Tommy Salo
-Roman Hamrlik for Eric Brewer,Josh Green and a 2nd (Winchester).

Man ,I miss those days. The only time we see a big multi player trade anymore is when Slats in involved.

That one is debatable...

McAmmond was pretty okay for good 10 years after, but BoBo got sh!ttier and sh!ttier with every pack of smokes and slice of pizza for a solid 5 years until he dissapeared from the league. And there was some talk at some point that he was a future Norris candidate.
Ethan Moreau was an excellent Oiler for at least 7 or 8 years, and although Cleary didn't work out for Edmonton as a scorer,he had a good career as well.
Whats the debate?

Please God yes!!! Can those 2 clowns...

No poop. Buchberger hasn't been on a PP since he was 14 years old and Smith scored on his own net. We can find better forsure. I would love if we could sign Doug Weight (my favorite Oiler all time) as an associate coach but he probably wouldn't accept anything below head coach now.

Man Benoit killed his wife and kids.... Uncalled for comment in any thread let alone an oilers coaching change thread.

Yeah,sh!tty. I'm a bit desensitized about it myself after all these years, but I get ya. Certainly not endorsing the behavior.Just the way the convo evolved I guess. Still, with all the "uncalled for" nonsense on a Cloutier thread I'm a tad suprised I got called out for it.

So really from an Oiler perspective I would say that Moreau was the sole take away and that a 3rd liner- provided needed grit however- he was oft injured... and when in the leadership role well once the weights and guerins were gone - its fair to say that's when we really did not have much in the cupboard... McAmmond and Cleary did not work out for the Oilers at all IMO...

Moreau-Marchant-Grier was arguably the best 3rd line in the NHL in the late 90's. If you want to judge Moreau on the old, crippled, slow version of 2007 then go ahead, but in his prime he was the definitivr checking winger.

So we agree on Moreau... and yes its fair to say we all liked the 1997 version opposed to the 2007... I will give you that... but all in all we gained on player out of that deal...

Sure. And if we didn't pull the trigger we would have another fast, undersized streaky winger and a fat slob, lazy russian defensemen that you had to worry about spending all night in a russian brothel everytime the team went to New York and Montreal.

You do need someone with NHL experience back there to help support and provide input into the decisions of a rookie head coach IMO... you may be right but I bet that's what the organization does...(hire another associate coach).

No,that's what Steve Tabellini does. Mac T considered it, but mostly because he wasn't sold on his tactical approach. A good assistant is just as effective, provided he's not just some idiot with name recognition.

I think we're gonna see an associate and two new assistants. How the dice fall I have no clue at this point.

Could be. Bucky needs to find success in the AHL or Jr if he ever wants to be a head coach in the NHL anyway, so he might as well move on.Ditto for Steve Smith. Eakins has been around long enough to find some good guys to help him out. Don't know what his strengths are though. Is he a tactition or a motivator? Good to have a smart guy with experience to help out, but not some useless old codger who has put to pasture years ago.
