He's way better than people give him credit for, but he's still an average defender. His bread and butter is offense. - mochoson
I personally think he's a little above average, but whatever. He's not an elite shutdown guy, he's an elite offensive guy that's very good defensively, in my opinion. At this point, there isn't a single Dman in the NHL that does both better (by that, I mean there isn't a single dman in the NHL that is better defensively AND offensively). |

Gonchar's pretty much done and the Stars are just gonna hand out tons of money to get to the (frank)ing floor...It's gonna mess up the scale once again...If Gonchar gets 5 then Legtang's gonna want 7... - Flyfreaky

Well Gonchar has more career goals than Letang has points, How much of Letangs points are Crosby and Malkin directly responsible for? He is a good player, but everybody thought Kaberle was too for his point production largely based on secondary assists. - Jay Uller
I bet I can find quite a few 50 or 60 year old Dmen that you could say the same thing about. That means SFA right now. |

In that case, wouldn't you think Letang is worth at least $7M or $8M to the Stars, given that you don't care about overpaying? Not the $5.5 you talk about? Hell, since it doesn't matter, I bet you could have gotten Letang for $20M over 2 years. - Dirte
They easily could of if Letang would take a 2 year deal. Why not?

Gonchar is the active leading scored for dmen, he has leverage in his negotiations no other player has. It doesn't effect the market the way you think it does. - mochoson
He's the leading scorer among active dmen because he's a senior citizen. |

Well, it would have been a hell of a lot smarter. If you're willing to throw away cap hit and money, just cause you have it, might as well do it on top quality.
Maybe they get a boatload of picks back at the deadline. Because, no one would give em up for Gonchar, if he's not on the IR by then. |

Pietrangelo
And before you say a word about points, there's no doubt in my mind he could be a PPG player if he wasn't trapped in Hitchcocks ancient defensive first system |

I like Pietrangelo, but I don't think he's better on either end.
In that defensive system he plays in, he had some of the highest goals against totals in the entire league at ES. |

No, it doesn't really mean anything to me, because as a 39 year old, he shouldn't really be COUNTED on doing anything, particularly with his spotty track record of health in the recent past, especially for 2 years. - Dirte
11 games missed in the past 2 seasons? Your post is telling me your paying attention to hockeydb more than whats going on (cue the I watch him play all the time comment) Seriously he is known for getting shots through. That's what the stars pp needs. He is an upgrade to their D roster, comes with a solid vet/leadership presence and had played with Gologoski before. It makes sense to me, but I guess because his age it will never work. |

Letang will NEVER make it to FA, all this comparing were doing is not only meaningless (because its two completely different situations/scenarios) it's irrelevant. If Letang says he wants 8 million dollars, he just might get it.
NHL GMs all shop in the same market, it's just what is affordable to some is not affordable to others. Mark Streit is heading to FA for this exact reason. He wants 5.5 because its what the market will bare, and the Islandeds consider that an overpayment. Not because he's greedy, not because Gonchar got 5, because its what the market will bear. |

You call comparing the career point and goal totals of a 26 year old to a 39 year old legitimate material?
It doesn't even deserve a response, to be honest.
the same ridiculous argument would suggest Iginla > Crosby. Jagr > Malkin. Ray Whitney > Stamkos.

And the only reason the market would bare $10M over two years for Gonchar is because a single GM went out and did something stupid.
Sorry, I don't gauge a players worth by what a single GM is willing to pay for him.
When Wade Redden was signed for $6M, everyone said it was stupid, he wasn't worth that. Sather thought otherwise. He was eventually proven wrong, and admitted it himself. Just because someone is willing to pay someone that, doesn't mean it's a smart decision. |

I didn't say better did I? we were talking contract dollars, if you think history isn't taken into account your kidding yourself.
But your main arguement is Dallas shouldn't upgrade on defense because he might not play all 82 games... so what are your thoughts on Lupul? |

Exactly, and that overpayment by one GM screws up things for the rest of the GM's trying to fill needs on defense... |
