I understand your point, but I guess I resent being the one that has to foot the bill for it and then on the flip side, get sideways glances when I try to improve my own product.

When I go down to watch the Flyers,I don't root for the NHL as an entity. I don't buy merchandise sporting the NHL logo. I root for the Flyers to win the Stanley Cup. And how they handle their business is my only concern.....not how Nashville's owners get it done (or some other small market).

- johndewar

I totally agree with that.. and have said so from the beginning. The only thing I am arguing is how what they did can be construed in negative light.

But the rest of the League doing better, can help the Flyers win the Stanley Cup. That's the entire point.

by your logic i should start putting teams in mexico. the tijuana cartels....richie and cartsy will be begging to go there.
- Philly1980

Wrong. My logic implies that at some point... you need to expand from one region, because before you know it, the over saturation will kill multiple franchises. See, Islanders/Devils.

Stronger the market the higher the salary cap... We can spend to the limit and do so regularly.

For petes sake, no more business talk!! zzzzzzzzzzzz
Lets get back to hockey. Besides when it comes to offer sheets, buyouts and contracts I'm pretty sure no one in the Flyers front office really gives a hoot what any of us think anyway!

Correct, it means:
1) Higher Hockey Related Revenue, which means a higher cap, and
B) Less revenue sharing needed for said growing franchise

Then the parent company should change the rules as I mentioned in my initial post. They can do that. The NHL should be mad. They have a different agenda than Snider and holmgren.

The salary cap helps small market teams at the expense of teams with greater resources.

Exactly! So if the small market teams do better, and bring in more revenue. What's going to happen to the Upper Limit?

Now spending more, doesn't automatically mean you'll do better. Or else the Yankees would win the World Series every year. But it sure does help.

Counterpoint: Several pages discussing 18 year old kids most of us know from YouTube clips and subjective scouting reports isn't much more compelling.

In theory yes. In practice no. In general, when a good business smells blood they go for the kill. That's good business, like it or not. I can give you countless examples in the banking, healthcare, technology, and food industires. Sports are not exempt. The flyers are a business and they did what was best for their business within the rules. If the owners don't like that then too bad - Homer doesn't have to be liked - in fact Machiavelli would suggest its better to be feared than loved. If the NHL does not like it then change the rules- they have the ability to do so. Sorry if that sounds harsh but the hard truth of owning a business is that your competitors are always trying to take your market share.... And in this case, increase their own market share by acquiring a key asset from Nashville.
- moylander

Actually, I agree with MJL on this. I think the banking or healthcare examples are not applicable in a sports league model. There are two better comparables...cooperatives or the concept of agglomeration.

Cooperatives are independent and in essence competitors, but by acting collectively in various business dealings, particularly selling their product to customers or dealing with suppliers, they can achieve economies of scale and hence do better in whole that by negotiating alone.

Agglomeration is the practice of locating similar businesses in the same area. Think Jeweler's row, or even a neighborhood yard sale. Even though these businesses are competing, they can attract more customers (and labor supply) collectively than if their stores were located in different sections of a city.

In both cases even though the parties are competing, it is in the their best interest for the whole to be more successful that any of the parts. The Flyers have no real benefit in "killing" the Predators or any other team. They were simply acting in their own self-interest - doing whatever it takes to make their team stronger.

I think Skip might find it easier to talk hockey prospects than to talk market saturation, opportunity cost, revenue streams, and profit margins.

I know I started tuning out shortly after I made my post about sport being different from other industries.

We could always discuss the economics of underground Russian prostitution rings and their supply/demand curves with and without Alexander Ovechkin in the country.
