Trying to get into the top 4 means NSH at 4, otherwise they would ahve said trying to get top 3 or top two or the first overall.
Secondly, this is where they try to offer Kesler who is exactly a NSH type player and anyone who follows VAN with even a passing glance has noticed all the talk of Kesler's time in Van coming to an end possibly.

Trying to get into the top 4 means they have a player (or players) in the top 4 they want and are likely in discussions with multiple teams in the top 4 in regards to potential trades. It does not mean all their eggs are in one basket (NAS).

Saying that, no, I do not believe Kes is moving. Although, the Canucks pretty much played without him for the last 2 years and did not show themselves to be half bad.
Who takes over for Kes if traded? Kassian? Nope... Higgins -- PAH-Lease.... we have had so many Higgens-Pyatt-Bernier-Sandlak 2nd line hopefuls with no strength or toughness in front.... I do not think they can replace kes.
Is the league thought Kes was available, I think we would see major momentum out of Philly, Detroit and New York... not Florida.

What an interesting thread in that we all know that many, if not all, teams call and ask about what it takes to move into the first few picks. That's just due diligence -- I'd be disappointed, for instance, if Paul Holmgren didn't know what the price was.
But what makes this interesting is that Vancouver is in an interesting place. The GM has publicly stated they want to reset the team, and with a new coach coming in, no ties exist between that person and anyone on the roster. That is ripe for a trade.
Just from the outside looking in, Ryan Kesler has been hurt a lot, lately. Sometimes that's bad luck, and hockey's a tough sport. People get hurt.
But at the same time, Vancouver can play without him. They've proven that they can have some level of success -- we can debate about how much, but they've proven that they can compete, to some degree, without him on the ice.
I don't overvalue or undervalue players. There are some who are more valuable to their franchises than they would be to another, which makes trades a little trickier.
But for me just sitting here, I don't know why a deal involving Ryan Kesler couldn't be reached for one of the higher picks in the first round, if that's what Vancouver wanted to do. Not many teams can afford to let popular players play out their careers with the same team ala Yzerman & Lidstrom. We should have traded Iggy 2-3 years ago. To keep the team fertile you have to roll over & get the proper value or you wind up facing the rebuild cliff. If Canucks were to trade Kesler & get in the top 3, that's ballsy but fans would be commending the move 3 years from now. Sedins are unique in that because there are 2 of them, the value wont come close & who can gut their assets for 2 stars in their 30's & beginning of their decline.

If it's the Canucks trading up for a top 4 pick then I'm guessing Kesler has a high chance of being involved, or potentially Schneider but that would be shocking. I'm not sure if Edler + first would be enough as the main parts of a package. - Nucker101

Which gm do you see out there willing to trade a pick that will likely be a franchise player for the next 15 plus years for a 5 mill cap hit that has not played half a season the last few years?
I don't see it. You can market MacKinnon for the next 15 years to a fan base.

A number of GMs across the league recognized that the reffing in the Canucks-Sharks playoff series was so unfair, that the Canucks deserve a break in the trading season this summer.
