"...which was signed when the Player was age 35 or older" Thats the part, just before the parenthesis, that I remember reading that wasn't clear. Or clear enough at least. Pronger signed it before he turned 35. So what guideline do you roll by? The rule or the stipulation?
- GirouxForTheShow

The stipulation is part of the rule, I really don't see how they could overlook it. You go by both, they wouldn't just put that language in there if it had no impact on the rule.

Then there is a question to be asked. Let's accept that they were mistaken about the 35+ rule. Do you think they wouldn't have traded for Pronger, and not extended him because of that? I don't think it would've changed anything.
- MJL

That's a fair question, and one for which I don't have a concrete answer. They may have reduced the years, and eaten a higher cap hit, but that's going further into the hypothetical realm.

Yes. There were unsubstantiated reports at the time that the reason he wrecked his bike was because he ran into a set of parenthesis that he didn't see.

Probably a sign that said "(Watch out Stupid!)"
- Tomahawk

Certainly wouldn't call him stupid. I'm nowhere near as down on him, or his record, as you seem to be. I think he's one of the better GMs in the league. Sure, not all his moves have worked out, but you can pick apart any GMs record like that. It's the nature of the job. The things I like about Holmgren are that he is aggressive, and when he does make a mistake, he recognizes it and corrects it (at least he has so far).

There are only a few GMs out there that I'd rather have. Very few. Maybe only one (Holland) that I can think of right off the top of my head.

It's gotta be Ellen Sue Gotlander.

You just know that young May Mortivito was likely passed around more than a joint at a Phish concert.

May Mortivito. The way I learned, a win is a win, unless its a guy. And I figure I could learn a few things from all the way May.

It may have if the new contract came with a 7 mil cap hit which would have been very likely...maybe even more.

It is worth mentioning that, despite my posting today, I'm a Holmgren fan. He's not perfect, but he's worked hard to improve this team. And as for 'mistakes', you can make the case that they are mistakes, but it's not fair to jettison the context.

Without context, you could also describe him as, "That GM who signed Lukas Krajicek as a top six defenseman on a cup contender."

He can certainly draft for me in the first round. After that, I'd give the chore to a twelve year old with a Hockey News Draft Preview.

Solid point. You also know that it won't require much effort on your part with May.

But let's hope that, of the things you learn from May, one of them isn't how to ask your doctor for valtrex.

He is aggressive, and I think that's where some of the carelessness has crept in.

Like I said in my first post, I'm a big fan of Homer in most respects. Putting the focus on his penchant for missteps isn't necessarily saying I don't like the guy -- he's got pros and cons like everybody else.

Yeah, Holland is probably one of the few... he never gets caught with his pants down and he's calculated and methodical. Chiarelli is the other. He's had to deal with just as much sh*t flying out of left field as Homer (Thomas walking out on the team, Savard stuck on LTIR), but somehow has cap space and all his core intact.

I'd think about trading Homer straight up for Ray Shero.

If they sign Suter or if the Weber thing went through, do they even trade JvR?
- johndewar

Wasn't everyone freaked out we had given up on him too fast when he started strong with Toronto? Diddn't that contract look pretty good at that point? I don't think Toronto is complaining... well they are hockey fans... maybe they are.

In my opinion, would've have signed him to the same deal, regardless of whether they knew it would be a 35+ deal or not.

Here's the thing I really hate about the Cap. It's turned fans into bean counters. "He's a good player but is he worth that contract?", "that contract is too long, we'll never be able to move it". I would really love to go back to not giving a crap what a player is paid, only if they are doing a good job.

Y'know the more I think about it, if Homer could sign Backstrom to even a 3 year 15-mil contract, it would be worth it to jettison Bryz's longer contract.

You might be able to, but the fans of teams without unlimited budgets would still have to care about how much the players got paid.
