I like it as a quick glance stat, but putting any serious merit to it (to me) is not a very conducive way of grading a player.
- jak521

I look at advanced stats as pieces to a puzzle. They are not argument enders or the "be all and end all". Just pieces to a puzzle.

And like Lester Freamon taught us "All the Pieces Matter".

My beef with the black jersey was that it was unoriginal in every way.

At least they tried with the silver in the logo. I didn't care for it, but respected the effort.

If I had any wish for the Flyers uniform (and the NHL uniforms in general) would be to go back to wearing white jerseys at home.

I had an idea for a black uni as an alternate, but someone in here shot it down a few weeks ago

Didn't think it was that bad

Holy smokes! All these years and I never realized that logo was a skate over the word Canucks. All this time I just thought it was some stylized nonsense.

That's really funny. I'd laugh but my son just pointed out to me that those late credit card payment ads on TV feature the same actors on both ends of the phone in different clothes.

Nothing earth-shaking here (since it's been speculated before) and it's only the writer's own prediction but Friedman's new 30 Thoughts column suggests the Flyers are considering targeting RFA defensemen this offseason: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/...rate-for-inspiration.html

Also, someone is going to seriously overpay for a small sample size on Bryan Bickell.

Haha yeah, one successful poach in 15-years, and that contract was a disaster (Penner).

I agree.

I approve of Homer's grading process based on years of playing experience, conferring with highly trained talent evaluators, and of course, his go-to carnival wheel approach...

Phoenix will be on the prowl for offence. And hide your restricted free-agent defencemen from the Flyers." - @FriedgeHNIC

Should be another NHL13 like offseason for homer... here come the offer sheets!

You're getting caught up in the inherent meaning of the labels...

Replace "tough" with "offensively potent" and "weak" with "not as offensively potent" in your mind.

Also, Couturier was better in that series at driving the play forward that he's ever been as a Flyer. I'm sure if we isolated his QualComp numbers from that series alone, they would look pretty good. But the point of statistics is to build reliable models based on large sample sizes... and for the balance of his career, Couturier has been average-weak competition for the most part.

No, I'm not getting caught up in the inherent meaing of the labels. I agree with what you said earler, it's about how players are used in some cases. What I'm pointing out is how flawed it is. We've seen it used today, to make a case for not acquiring a player. Possibly incorrectly.

And you made an earlier post, stating that Couturier is a pretty special defensive player. And in this post, you're stating that he has been average-weak competition for the most part, for the balance of his career.

The bottom line in my opinion, that for some, the advanced stats are way overused and relied upon. And given more weight then actually watching the game, and the players play. Some of it is very useful. But a lot of is just flawed math formulas that tell lies.

Seriously.

When I saw the post with "skate on the front" I was confused. I've been around the block a few times and for the life of me couldn't recall them having a skate logo so off to Google I went. I found a "history of the Canucks' uniform" site and lo-and-behold they described the skate logo. I looked at the pic and was dumbstruck.

In all seriousness, do we know the extent (or lack thereof) that the Flyers use advanced statistics?

Has Holmgren ever even been asked?
