One thing I miss from the 70's and it's not Flyers related and a Jersey I love but will never own...

When the Rangers were home the lettering spelled Rangers and when they were on the road it spelled New York. It's a small thing but I thought it was brilliant at the time.

- mayorofangrytown

while i don't "love" the jersey - probably because it's the rangers and it just makes me nasueous - but agree on the nuance. i liked the subtle change between road and home jerseys.

You think its possible to get Shattenkirk from St Louis without giving up Couts?
I think Read+Gus/Lauri/Bourdon/Ghost + 11th should be able to get it done... St Louis is gonna be cap sytrapped next year with so many RFAs they need to sign, and Shats very well could be available with JBouw in St Louis now.

- FLYERSROCK!

Matt Read + the 11th + Ghost should absolutely be able to get that done, but for some reason, every trade today seems to resemble a hostage negotiation, especially for defensemen.

Once upon a time, the formula was always "Roster Player + First-Round Pick + Above-Average Prospect" for a pretty good NHL player.

Nowadays, you'd think that every single good player is a Hart or Norris candidate, for what teams are demanding.

With the cap dropping, it is going to be interesting to see the kind of offers that guys like Streit will get this off season. I suspect the days of $5 mill for Matt Carle are over (at least temporarily).
- Doc_Sarcasm

Doubt it. Top Free Agents are still going to get top dollar.

Quick question, since you tend to be an advanced stats guy. But just exactly what is the criteria for establishing what players are easy competition, and what aren't?
- MJL

Its the sum of Corsi of the players he played against, weighted for how much time the player is on the ice with them. It shows if a player is going against other team's top lines (the ones generating the highest Corsi #) or more checking lines (lower Corsi #'s).

Way too much to give up for Shattenkirk.
- MJL

Am i missing something???
Shattenkirk is a #3 dman, would be #2 on this team...

guy is extremely underrated.

I know some people weren't happy with it but I absolutely love the most recent Winter Classic Jersey.

And both of the ones you passed on are not in my ginormous jersey collection. I think the black, the Silver and the initial Rebooks are the only versions of Flyers Jersey's I don't own.

- mayorofangrytown

i didn't buy one, but i like it. could have been better, imho.

i own 2 black jerseys. i have a boucher and a lindbergh. i preferred the orange, but i like them. not original from the scheme at the time, but it don't have the hatred that many have for this one.

I liked the winter classic jersey. A Lot.

My favorite jersey in my tiny collection (and its one that a lot of people hate) is the black Canucks jersey with the red and gold skate on the front.

- Doc_Sarcasm

i love that jersey. don't have one of the black ones, but i do have a blank red alternate one from that era. always wanted to get mclean and 1 on the back. maybe some day.

It's a loose term for lines that give up a lot more shots against than for.

how much do you know on him Mr. Expert of everything?

Its not too much. Giving up a sophomore whos a solid 2 way player, an 11th pick and a future #4 dman for IMMEDIATE d help for the forseeable future

it is absolutely not too much for Shattenkirk. Not at all. We dont have a top 10 pick, yes a good player will still be there but that is NOT too much for Shattenkirk.

I grew up on that logo so it's one of my all time favourites even though I now can see how bad it was.

I have a black San Fransisco Spiders jersey. I wore it so much I had to retire it.

do we want to get better on d people???
Shattenkirk is a 24 year old dman who is only going to get better, will be a top pairing dman, and will be our #1 dman when Kimmo leaves. I love Read as much as anyone here but it is absolutely NOT too much to give up Read+11th+someone like Lauridsen or Manning or Bourdon or Ghost.
None of those players in that trade will be better than Shattenkirk.

Or you know we can trade Couts, 11th, Gus or more for Yandle, whos really an exact replica of Shattenkirk but will a) cost more b) have a higher cap hit and is c) not as good defensively as Shats is

But hey whatever we can sign 35 year old Mark Streit to a 4 year deal worth 5M/yr or get a #3 or #4 guy, when we've already got FIVE of those guys

To give you have to get.

are you a fan with a jersey curse...you know, every one that you obtain the player is traded or bought out within a year or so?

It's an overpayment. You're giving up a solid NHL Forward in Read. A solid first round pick in a very deep draft. And possibly the team's bext defense prospect. I would not give them both Read and the #11 for Shattenkirk. One or the other, but not both.

So it's the opposite. A checking line that limits shots, is considered tough competition. But a scoring line that gives up a lot of shots against in easy.

Bill do you think Nicolas Petan has a legit shot at being an effective NHLer?

Is he in the Gerbe mold?

- jak521

Yes. He may score a little more in the NHL than Gerbe has.
