what do you guys think of potentially signing Streit?
- sarmen25

I...go back and forth on it.

I respect the things Mark Streit does well -- he can still skate, move the puck, shoot the puck. He is, even at his age, an above average offensive defenseman.

But what I always come back to is this: What exactly do you pay him, and for what term? And is he the best fit for where the Flyers are right now?

I guess, for me, I am more willing to roll the dice on Erik Gustafsson and just live with the results for a half-season, because at some point, don't you have to know what you have?

If the Flyers hadn't re-signed Kimmo Timonen, I'd be all aboard for Mark Streit. But Erik Gustafsson -- don't the Flyers have to find out what he is at the NHL level?

He's been an AHL All-Star. By all reports, including from Bill Meltzer, he played a significant role for the World Championship Sweden team. He played well down the stretch for the Flyers, logging big minutes, including on the second PP unit.

So my question would be this: What else would Erik Gustafsson have to do to solidify a spot heading into the offseason? Because if you sign Streit, aren't you basically saying that Gustafsson isn't in your Top 6, no matter what he does?

I didn't mind the black as much as I did the alteration of the logo when they included the silver.

if I could get him in at 4 mil per or less it would be worth doing if the term didn't go long.

I don't think he'll come in at both of those criteria. He's going to want length or dollars if not both.

If they sign Streit they would probably trade Mezaros for a draft pick. Then the D-pairs would be.

I didn't mind the black as much as I did the alteration of the logo when they included the silver. I'm sure on a computer screen someone could sell it as a 3D look but it just laid there on the jersey and never worked.

The Black Jersey needed more orange but agreed, after the failed silver experiment it was my second least favourite.

- mayorofangrytown

My beef with the black jersey was that it was unoriginal in every way.

At least they tried with the silver in the logo. I didn't care for it, but respected the effort.

If I had any wish for the Flyers uniform (and the NHL uniforms in general) would be to go back to wearing white jerseys at home.

the 3D/chrome bordered logo made me furious. so unbelievably bad and unnecessary. the jersey was lousy too. thank the hockey gods that the whole thing was put out to pasture. i never bought one. never will. hideous.

the sleeve treatment on the jerseys after the league-wide reebok conversion with the tight fit and scalloped front/back (07-08) was also hideous. didn't buy one of those either.

i like they went back to the original design although the orange is a bit too bright for my liking. i prefer the darker, original color.

i don't think they tried at all. let's slap and extra border around an already great, classic logo. so (frank)ing awful.

they should have created a true alternate - different jersey styling with a brand new sub-identity. leave the original logo alone. it can never be updated or tweaked. even if they just went with an identity that was only typography, it would have been a better decision.

i agree on wearing white at home. i prefer it. it reminds me of going to games when i was a kid. hopefully, they'll go back to this trend, but i doubt it, because the league is so (frank)ing stupid.

In the "any other comments" box of the NHL Fan surveys I get that is one of the two responses I always give.

With the cap dropping, it is going to be interesting to see the kind of offers that guys like Streit will get this off season. I suspect the days of $5 mill for Matt Carle are over (at least temporarily).

I know some people weren't happy with it but I absolutely love the most recent Winter Classic Jersey.

And both of the ones you passed on are not in my ginormous jersey collection. I think the black, the Silver and the initial Rebooks are the only versions of Flyers Jersey's I don't own.

One thing I miss from the 70's and it's not Flyers related and a Jersey I love but will never own...

When the Rangers were home the lettering spelled Rangers and when they were on the road it spelled New York. It's a small thing but I thought it was brilliant at the time.

You think its possible to get Shattenkirk from St Louis without giving up Couts?
I think Read+Gus/Lauri/Bourdon/Ghost + 11th should be able to get it done... St Louis is gonna be cap sytrapped next year with so many RFAs they need to sign, and Shats very well could be available with JBouw in St Louis now.

I can say that Bourdon's value is little to none because of his concussion history.

I liked the winter classic jersey. A Lot.

My favorite jersey in my tiny collection (and its one that a lot of people hate) is the black Canucks jersey with the red and gold skate on the front.

I think Gustafsson already has a spot. The only way he's not in the lineup on opening night, is if he plays so poorly, that he plays his way out of it. I don't anticipate that happening. Or he's traded. But the Flyers need a top puck moving defenseman added to the lineup, in addition to whatever Gustafsson can bring to the team in that regard.

I grew up on that logo so it's one of my all time favourites even though I now can see how bad it was.

I have a black San Fransisco Spiders jersey. I wore it so much I had to retire it.

No thanks on Streit.

-- Too old (35+ contract)
-- Too much coin
-- Had favorable zone starts vs. easy competition and still couldn't post a positive Corsi rating

Quick question, since you tend to be an advanced stats guy. But just exactly what is the criteria for establishing what players are easy competition, and what aren't?
