It's my fervent hope that that last part changes. - Jsaquella
I don't know why, or have anything substantial to back it up. But I just have this gut feeling, that Gustafsson is going to be more then he is expected to be. That he is this sort of late bloomer. The only thing that discourages me is his size.
I have to admit my hatred of Boston has fizzled watching them spank the penguins like an unwanted stepchild . If the flyers want a system to follow, which I suggest they re-evaluate the one they have, Boston and Detroit are two teams I suggest they look at. - JoeRussomanno
I'll add LA and Chicago to that list. They all play the right way.

The size and injury history are concerns, but I have little doubt he's a regular top six NHLer right now, and could well end up being more than that. His play at the worlds and even the tail of the NHL season is encouraging, and he's shown flashes in the past.
few teams have the players to emulate this boston mindset, thank god - stayinthefnnet
I doubt they can totally copy what the Bruins do, but utilize their mindset, value chemistry over perceived needs, stress responsible players, who will work hard at both ends of the ice. Be smart in free agency and avoid wasting assets in trade.
The Flyers, despite their success, are a wasteful team.

but on a serious note i do see what youre saying. i just meant its easier have that menacing aspect to your team when you have chara and lucic, although pride and defensive effort and commitment isnt restricted by someones size

Detriot was the flip side of that coin, but a team and organization that has a plan, follows it and plays a 200 foot game and can beat you in any number of ways.

yeah. its just a shame. so much raw talent on both the pens and flyers and yet they just lack whatever intangible x is

In the case of the Pens, it seems to be discipline from the coach down. Therrien was a taskmaster and the players seemed to turn on him. Bylsma came in as a players' coach and they seem to have lost that needed discipline and focus.
In the Flyers case it's more that they lack a consistent organizational plan. They spend an inordinate amount of time trying to win last year's Stanley Cup.

yeah. at the very least, the flyers could never be accused of apathy. that would be a major development for some professional franchises. i do think the flyers are trending in the right direction though.
in the pens case, i just really dont know. letang is the perfect embodiment of what they are, if that makes sense

I just don't want a repeat of the dismantling of the young core group. Yes, long term the trades of Carter & Richards will probably be beneficial. But the Flyers were serious contenders prior to those deals, and with the abject failure that the Bryzgalov experiment and injury to Pronger, they're not right now.
I just want to see them be smart about correcting that. No need to rush out and half ass it. They need to avoid overpaying-or at least severely overpaying-for a Edler/Yandle/Johnson/Shattenkirk level guy. If they do go whole hog, it needs to be for an elite guy.
Otherwise, I'd try a short term reclamation project(Ryan Whitney, Jamie McBain) or see if I could land a young guy with good mobility, such as a Rafe Diaz or Rundblad, so long as the price is right and roll with Erik Gustafsson taking a larger role.
