This Boston and Pens series is going a long way to healing my pysche from the round 1 debacle. The more I realize, this Leaf team maybe better than I ever thought.

I know you aren't a troll
They are your best players. They are also your best young players. They are also considered all but untouchable.
The Leafs don't have that kind of depth of young "superstar potential" talent. While neither Gardiner nor Rielly may ever become a superstar, they are the closest thing we have to it. They are FAR less able to just give one of those guys up to plug a hole than Edmonton is.
I find it hilarious that Edmonton blogs are chock full of people describing like 5 or 6 players as untouchable, and yet feel perfectly free to suggest another team trade its best young talent for an aging center whose best days are behind him. - Aetherial
It's an interesting question: Are the leafs more in a position to unload young talent for proven winners because they've filled more holes in their roster already, or are the Oilers, because they're filled their holes better?
Although even that is arguable I think. You've got a half-decent top pairing calibre defender in Phaneuf, which is more than we can say right now in Edmonton (although I'll reserve judgment on Justin Schultz either way until I see a full season of him). You've got guys like Lupul and Kessel who produce at the same or better clip than our young guns. I just felt like you guys might roll the dice on this one to fill a big need.
I mean, in a couple years when Eberle is Kessel's age, he might be gone to bring back a defenseman in a trade. I guess untouchables are different for each team, and you're looking to keep the elites like Gardiner and Rielly on the Toronto list.
What's a fair price for Thornton do you think? Please respond in triple posts, so we can see lots of that avatar
EDIT: I realize the phrase "proven winners" in reference to Thornton will probably de-rail this whole topic, but let's just pretend I said "proven veteran prescence"

I don't think either team is in a great position to unload young talent to fill positions. In this scenario. I would say toronto would be better position based on team results this past season. However, saying that it would be a case by case basis say its shea webber well then you have to do to get someone like that for sure.
With phaneuf I think we will. See how good he truly is when we get a top pairing guy to play with him.
For thorton you re looking a first rounder, matt frattin gunnerson/ franson and another prospect or draft picks

one example, another is Seguin--not getting into a debate on that trade as Phil has done what he could and then some. But I can see it now, we move the pick, team gets off to bad start, kessel rumours fly, phaneuf rumours fly, then we get stuck with crap
