You're forgetting that we get DP as well. He's still pretty good on NHL 13 - Skalapy
No brainer, I'd rather have Scrivens backing up Reimer than DiPietro. |

Unlikely, although we're at the disadvantage that Hall, Eberle, Nuge and Yakupov are probably the four best players on our team (putting aside each of their current values compared to Reilly and Gardiner).
Kessel
Kadri
JVR
Lupul
Phaneuf
Reimer, probably
heck even Gunnarsson and Bozak are higher up on the list of current impact players than Gardiner and Reilly.
You're a team that's positioned to make this move, the Oilers aren't really. I wasn't trying to troll or anything. - Morris
Yeah, I think for both the Leafs and Oil, they would love to add a bona fide star veteran player and could make a deal, but what other teams are going to ask blows too much of a hole in their respective depth charts...the Oil just can't trade any of their top four or five elite kids now, and I think the Leafs think there's no way they're trading Kadri, Rielly, Gardiner, this year's first...having those young guys and getting their first few contracts is so huge under the cap
Too bad you can't combine the Leafs and Oilers, that team would be SICK...but it would still need a Dman lol

Why does anyone care about MLSE money?
As a hockey fan you'd rather a corporation that owns your team save money over getting a player who could potentially entertain you for years?
I find it somewhat insane that people are so protective about money that isn't theirs.

Maybe we are scared of what MLSE will do to recover the 25 mill they just pissed away. |

I would love to have Thornton in Toronto.
But I wouldn't give up more than D'Amigo to get him.
It just doesn't make sense. - Atomic Wedgie

I really couldn't care less what MLSE does with their money. But they won't do that.
Conversely, if the Isles had a way of getting out from DiPi's contract and all it cost them were some prospect who had never set foot on NHL ice, they'd be insane not to do it.
Some people forget that pro sports have a monetary component to them, as well, which often conflicts with the NHL13 video game fantasies. |

yeah that is like saying "I'd only pay D'Amigo for Iginla" before he got moved to Pittsburgh. That being said though, Toronto needs to have some kind of security if they are trading for a 34 year old UFA.
Either Toronto gives SJ a conditional 2015 1st in addition to whatever gets a deal for Thornton done (condition being Thornton re-signs). Or Toronto makes a deal with the condition that Thornton re-signs or they nix the whole thing.
If you assume he re-signs Thornton can easily fetch an NHL player, a solid prospect and a 1st.... maybe more. If you cannot get the extension right away then the best San Jose can get from Toronto IMO is:
Grabovski
Liles
Holzer
D'Amigo
*conditional 2014 draft pick
**conditional 2015 1st
for
Thornton
Boyle
*depending on Leafs' success in the playoffs, anywhere from 1st - 3rd round pick.
**conditional that Thornton and/or Boyle re-signs (maybe have a little side clause that downgrades the pick to a 4th or something if SJ got a 2014 1st).
Now before all you SJ fans have a freak out, I'm not saying that deal is good or that SJ would take it, just saying that if we cannot get a guarantee that Thornton would re-sign that is the max the Leafs SHOULD pay. - Steven_Dean

Joe Thorton or Stastny, or tell the leafs to pack their bags, because we won't make the playoffs next season if we do nothing this summer - Mapleleafs_91
Funny the exact same thing was said this year.
There's no reason to think if Reimer plays like he did this year, with a full year of Lupes and play from Gards like he did in the playoffs we can't make it. |

True, I'd do more I think it's a good start though. Im more surprised at the lack of love from Leafers.
If I could be done without Kadri, Gardiner or Reilly I'm on board.
Colborne, Percy, 1st? For futures that's pretty solid. Or in your opinion would they prefer current NHLers - Blazed
You could justify losing one of those if he came with an extension. |

Isles aren't giving anyone Strome. - robin_steele264
Conversely, nobody would take DiPietro's money for just Strome. It cuts both ways, so it probably won't happen.
If the Isles - a team struggling to stay afloat - wouldn't give up Strome to get rid of a 22 million dollar obligation (assuming that were even being offered), then I guess that's their problem. |

Yeah, it was a very different team than the last Ron Wilson edition. I think anyone making bets on the Leafs making the playoffs again will think it over carefully. |
