Right. So to try and compete now, you trade one of your good young players to spend that extra 4M on a UFA....
And the Leafs owner will be thrilled to be the one to buyout this awful contract I'm sure.
It won't happen and you know it. - Scabeh
Oh Lord, are you kidding?
Leafs would do this deal in a heartbeat.
Spend money to get a young #1 stud centre?
For nothing more than cash?
They'd be all over it.
We aren't the ones holding up this deal. |

She is pretty cool, got to talk to Hazel and councillor Mullen over the naturalization project near us, after all that was said and done and as Hazel was getting back in the car, she turned to me and Mullen and said, this street needs to be paved, come the summer, it was paved, lol. - LeafMan

Alrighty then.
But why bother even bringing up how awesome Thornton would look if you plan a lowball like that? Imo Thornton would get at least what Iginla got (1st and two D'amigo-level prospects)
Also, you gotta figure if you're acquiring 1 year of someone you're making pretty damn sure they'll re-sign with you first. - Morris
Because it's a fact?
Thornton would be terrific next year in Toronto. No doubt about it.
But the Leafs aren't winning the cup next year, so giving up any good asset just hurts the future. |

Meanwhile in Toronto they move Thornton to defense allowing them to trade Franson for Hemsky and Omark
Hemsky-Grabovsky-Omark
The most disappointing second line to ever exist. - Morris

Real question is which combo of Grabo, Komi, Liles, late round pick will the Leafs be willing to give up for him? - robin_steele264
All of them, and we'll even toss in the bargaining rights of one Tim Connolly(to replace Thornton at the #1C position) |

Vodka + Caffeine Pills + every councilor hoping she quits.
Love her, but had a good talk with a city councilor since I'm here for another two days before I head to Iqaluit...uggg....she's getting pretty lucid. |

Leafs have put up the greatest challenge to the Bruins thus far in the playoffs. Clearly we're cup material. |

Joe Thornton is too laid back for a crazy market like Toronto.
And I agree that, if he WERE on the market, a lot of teams would pay a lot more for him than TO would be willing to give up.
That said, I'd do Joe Colborne, Liles, Holzer and a 2nd.
2 middling prospects, one salary dump and a draft pick. |

Because when you say "I'd do...", that usually means you're stating your best offer. Of course I'd be willing to offer a worse deal -- which you've clearly done
And I don't think the Leafs have the assets to make a better offer than that. Without being significantly weakened long-term. |

Yeah I think it's really holding the Oilers back that they can't acquire Toews, Letang, Lucic and Quick in exchange for Omark, because it really would be a poopshow for Edmonton.
But seriously, ACTUALLY landing (and then extending) Thornton isn't worth some serious consideration? |

Can you guys please stop talking about the Strome thing! I don't think (or hope) it's gonna happen so its a waste of time talking about. If it does happen, which it probably won't, I'll be very mad. |
