whoa.. slow down.. BIG BIG difference spending money out of profit over increasing losses.. HUGE difference

I think maybe we are not arguing on the same page here.

I am addressing, specifically, the comment about having Strome on your team increases playoff dates and therefore pays for the DiPi buyout.

i.e. you buyout DiPi and get it back by retaining Strome.

This arguement is identical whether you are the Leafs buying out DiPi but havign Strome on the team or whether you are the Islanders buying out DiPi and having Strome on the team.

IF, you are ONLY considering the buyout of DiPi then yes, it is far more "doable" for the Leafs. I am arguing the point that Strome pays for the buyout?

Wedgie might have a point in that, the extra playoff dates Strome would bring the Leafs would be worth more than the ones that he would bring the Islanders. I don't know if it is true, but his arguement makes sense.

maybe the league doesnt want things to look like players are being bought like that. At least make it look like a hockey trade of some sort.

Also because I wouldnt expect NYI to dangle Strome as bait to take RD. If would take a lot more than a 2nd

- senstroll

The Leafs have already done it, twice. The league is fine with the Leafs helping out financially needy franchises.

I think this is definitely true.

Did anyone ever conclude whether or not a guy has to play a certain amount of games for a team before he can be bought out?

1: the isles have already stated they WILL NOT be rolling over Thomas' contract.. so that nixes that

2: once again.. the isles made the playoffs this year.. therefore Wang got some extra revenue.. he liked that.. he realizes he has a young core and wants to improve it WITHOUT spending more. In order to this he needs to get out from under DPs contract. period the end.

you need to view what the isles want (playoff revenue) coupled with what they are willing to spend.. you guys are not addressing both needs at once

- Dozzer

Its only perceived that Wang wont increase the payroll, it hasn't been confirmed for the upcoming season. He made some extra cash in the playoffs, he might be willing to spend a couple more million to not only get back to the playoffs but go further.

The idea of the Isles getting Lou would instantly make them a top 5 team in the east if their forwards continue to play the way they have.

yeah but it was close enough that they could sort of make it look legit. Obtaining a guy and then paying millions to buy him out immediately, and getting Strome for your troubles is just way too obvious.

(The Nashville deal was pretty obvious also)

I'm really wondering if the Wanger's heart is still in this.

For the longest time, the Islanders were his vehicle for a multi-billion dollar development deal.

That's dead. He's signed a long-term lease to be a tenant in Brooklyn. He professes to love hockey, but there are several signs that point to otherwise.

Why does he want to still be owner?

- Atomic Wedgie

my guess is he has something up his sleeve for brooklyn now.

or he cleans up the contract messes the team is in before the move which would entice ratner to buy the team

okay.. arguing specifics then fine.. i was arguing for the general idea.. the pieces could be changed..

maybe a first rounder and not strome.. i am just saying that i dont think wang wants to buy out DP. but he has to get rid of the contract in order to move forward.

I think the answer to that is: we have no way of telling, as nobody has seen the actual CBA yet. Hell, the NHL may not have even thought about this yet.

I assume you mean Franson and maybe Beauchmin trades?

Nashville got Lebda, slaney and a 4th out of it.. it was exactly the same thing.

Beauchmin was nothing like taking RD

think they made up 16million in the playoffs?

going by forbes 2012 thats how much they would need to break even

Nope.
Far from it, but they did make more.
A longer playoff run would bring in even more money, creditability, fans and possibly more sponsors.
Wang has to know this.

It is intriguing. You have to know that Wang would LOVE to get out from under that deal, as much as Gillis would, probably even more. I think Gillis feels that Luongo at least has some value.

I didn't even see whether or not this was even a possible scenario under the CBA?

No. About three or four years ago the Leafs took some dead weight salary from the Lightning for a 4th round pick, or something like that. I think the Bolts were having some financial issues at the time.

Kolzig maybe? A few guys with decent salaries. I don't think any of them played a single game for the Leafs.

The last few days here were pretty entertaining, but I still feel Nonis will make some very conservative, however excellent, moves this off season to get the Leafs ready for a Cup push next year...

I wish it would be JoeT but that wont happen.
I dont consider Clarkson significant, but I suppose on the leafs he wont be a top 6 and would be an improvement over Kule and Mac.
