I like the idea of acquiring a guy like Thornton..... he is exactly what we (Toronto)need.
I like Marleau BETTER (how some have called him horrible on previous posts.. give your heads a shake.... he is a BEAST... and will probably make Team Canada in the next Olympics... speed.. shot... size (6'2.5 - 6'3).. is clutch defensively... and scores big goals (ask Vancouver who got the OT winner to eliminate them this year in the first round)... ) as a more complete player then Joe. Being able to play the wing as well as centre, take and win draws too and you have a highly skilled hockey player but......
with Kessel being our "potential" 50 goal guy.. (so not to make any mistakes and MISS-label him.. lol ... we need a guy who can feed him the puck... and in Thornton you get the BEST PASSING Centreman in the game.. aka BEST PLAYMAKER/setup guy... (honourable mention insert Datsyuk's name or Marty St Louis's if you'd like) Add the fact that he's 6'4, 230lbs, at 34 I can realistically see him playing 3-4 years if he can stay healthy and durable. Toronto WILL resign him for a 2-3 year deal, if this was to say happen... he gets his last contract... (worst case scenario we trade him as a 37 year old to get some depth back from what we lost to acquire him) and we see how good this team can be in a few years. Finally he's a Centre... and really good in the faceoffs.. so he comes to Toronto and helps our guys Kadri, Grabbo, Colborne et all on the draws (which we really need to improve) it's pretty much a no brainer!
At this point in his career he is the old veteran guy who knows what it takes to win in big games (Team Canada at least) and if Toronto acquires him that may make other UFA's rethink and see a good thing happening in Tha Tee-Dot (Ya I went there.. lol) and sign here too.... now all of a sudden your team losses a few pieces... hold onto Reilly, Gardiner, Colborne, Kulemin and Kadri along with the obvious core... call it one or two of.... D'Amigo, Percy (Who I personally really like), Biggs, McKegg, Holtzer and a few others who you think San Jose might have some interest in and add a 1st or 2nd (one of either but not both together to be clear and depending on prospects they ask) round pick and possibly a player like Liles (though I don't mind Liles in all honesty) or Komiserak... and I think you can clearly make a trade and give up fair value for a guy like Thornton all while still being able to retain a lot of depth with prospects with plenty of potential
Imagine we sign Clarkson and Bickel.... as UFAs as a result of the Toronto trade for Big Joe. (I bring up these two names simply because that's the rumor going around this last few days) and look at the transformation.. not sure but maybe make him Captain... every team needs the 30something year olds to compete for the cup and if we gotta get somebody is there someone out there who fills our biggest void at this moment.. a TRUE #1 Centre. San Jose has Couture (which ended up being the pick they got from us when they gave us Noland... edit and insert Side Show Bob grumbling here) he is a really good player and has just about passed Big Joe on the depth chart so that may make him more expendable then Marleau to them at least... and they get a combination of a roster player, prospect(s) and draft pick(s)... everyone is happy.. SJ rebuilds and changes their chemistry and may make more changes.. who knows.. and our Leafs acquire a sound piece to a somewhat interesting structure to say the least!
Sorry for the novel.. I read tons of the posts on here all the time just don't offer up a lot of impute due to lack of time so it's nice to chime in once a blue moon.
Cheers fellas.
Then we can go out and make a deal... to acquire via trade if we think we need some more blueline help. I like what I saw with Gardiner physically at the end of the Boston series but it remains to see of he can continue that in the regular season for a full 82.... if he can he looked pretty solid or much improved in his own end..

Funny the exact same thing was said this year.
There's no reason to think if Reimer plays like he did this year, with a full year of Lupes and play from Gards like he did in the playoffs we can't make it. - SameOld
This year? Half a season doesn't count. The leafs can't play a 82 game season, check previous years my good sir. They get lazy and give up and fall apart as usual. Plus this game 7 disaster will be in the back of their heads. I am calling it, if they don't make some significant changes, defensively(defensive minded forwards or on defense) and at center, then i say they will not make it.
This year i knew the leafs were going to make it, why? Because leafs play a good half a season and then fall apart the other half as usual. They go on a good run in the beginning then get lazy and fall apart, then we choke, then we don't make it. |

No to Thornton. Guaranted if we trade our first, we'll suck large. THAT'S OUR CURSE! - mykokes
Or we wait like a normal team, have patience, and try to sign him as a UFA next summer |

The sharks would probably keep marleau over thorton since they would have couture as #1 and pavelski at #2 centerman, while marleau is a versatile winger/centerman who generates alot of goals in playoffs/regular season for the sharks. Plus marleau has been a shark since he first started, makes sense that he would remain with the sharks for the rest of his career, finish with the sharks, and resign with a decent cap hit because san jose has always been his home. The sharks need a veteran presence still, because logically, thorton will have to be the one that has to be moved which makes the most sense, and boyle will not be resigned because he is getting there in age. |

Hit the post in OT of game 4 too..... win that one and it's 2-2, and the Leafs won the next 2. |

I don't know why they refer to that Frattin breakaway as a "pivotal" moment in the game. We had a 4-1 lead, the pivotal moment could've been, "one of the forwards besides McClement or Kulemin actually blocking a shot" or "anyone in a blue sweater icing the puck a couple of times"... |

This Boston and Pens series is going a long way to healing my pysche from the round 1 debacle. The more I realize, this Leaf team maybe better than I ever thought. - mykokes
They coughed up a 4-1 lead with 10 mins left in game 7.
That should bring you back to reality. |

I agree with what your saying as there are many pivotal moments in any game...I think they were saying a 5-1 lead would have secured the Leafs the victory (even with the meltdown)... |

I know what they're saying, but when you have a 4-1 meltdown with 10 minutes left, you can't pin that on the next goal. 2-1 lead? Sure, but in the playoffs, in game 7 with 10 minutes left, a 3 goal lead should be enough. |
