No the addition of Garrison means that you have 5 defensemen making 4.2 million or higher on your team and you need to move some serious salary. Not that you can afford to. Edler should fetch a good return. Just not a top 5 pick in this years draft.
- Ihatebrianburke

Ballard won't be on the team next year. He'll either be traded, waived, or bought out. Problem solved.

The addition of Garrison absolutely means that the Canucks can now afford to trade Edler if they want. It does not mean they have to.

I never said Edler would fetch a top 5 pick this year.

Better check again. Bonuses on elc contracts don't count to the cap.
- Iggysbff

Really? You mean to say that a rookie who makes his bonus Nd earns the max salary doesn't count against the cap? What happened in Chicago after they won the cup and Toewes/Kane got all those bonuses? Oh right, Bowman was screwed.

Seems like most of the posters from other teams just take one opinion/suggestion of one fan and then assume that we all think the same way. "OMG stupid Canucks fans overvaluing Edler!"

After trading for two young goalies in the last year, along with having one of the most highly regarded goaltending prospects in the system, there is absolutely no way Tampa remotely considers taking on Luongo. No way no how, never.
- Dirte

I never said Tampa would consider picking up Luongo. Yzerman has made it quite clear he won't. I'm saying it's a mistake. He should have acquired Luongo instead of attempting to fill the gap with two completely unproven kids in Bishop and Lindback. How'd the addition of Lindback work for him last year?

They do count. But for all ELC bonuses, they raise that teams cap. But then, if they’re over the actual cap, the amount they’re over by gets shifted to the following season. In other words, if they pay out bonuses, that’s the amount that actually ends up counting against the cap. Only what is paid out. Same end result.

You might think it’s a mistake, but most teams aren’t willing to screw themselves for so long, for what may (or may not be, the way he’s been playing) some short term help.

I think Burrows Edler will be packaged to TB Car NYI or PHI this offseason. We have too many NTC/NMC on this team and adding two more in july will cripple the Canucks for years. They need wiggle room.

If Canucks traded Lu for Vinny and a prospect and bought out Vinny and TB re=signed him for a better contract they would , so don't say no way .

Woah baby(Bob Cole voice), are you expecting them both to be moved this off-season, or hoping/suggesting it? There's a big difference.

Why not just buyout Luongo then? Unless that prospect made that deal worth it. I also would thik that the CBA would probably have something that doesn't allow for things like that to happen, but maybe that's a loophole.

bottom line none of the teams that are picking top 5 are in win-now mode so edler isn't as valuable to them as a potentital superstar down the road...if there was a team who was one top pairing d man away from contention then maybe (i stress maybe) this could happen.

Of courese it would need to be a great prospect. I was merely pointing out to the poster nothing is impossible.

I do believe both will be traded befroe NTC kicks in. Burrows is starting his decent so dump him before he loses value and has a NTC.

You're only screwed if he doesn't play well for the next 4-5 years. If he does then he's a great deal. With the last 3 years of his deal Luongo will either play well, in which case he's a steal ($1M per year, $5.3M cap hit) or he won't play well and he'll either retire or you can trade him to a team who needs to hit the cap floor but pay very little salary.

Lots of teams passed on Luongo because they weren't the right fit. If you have a goalie already, or you have a young up and comer you SEE as the next great goalie (Markstrom???) then you aren't going to pick up Luongo. Tampa represented the perfect fit. They were a team with no goaltending, no goalie prospects, and it was a team trying to win now. They tried Lindback and they failed. Now they're trying Bishop. They also got rid of Mike Smith (oops). They've been a mess in goal for years and Luongo would have finally provided stability.

I'd say it's 50/50 at best if Edler gets moved. I'd be shocked if Burrows got moved. Not saying that they shouldn't be traded, just that it's not as likely as some of you guys are hoping/expecting.

Vasilevsky is arguably the best goalie prospect in the world right now. Lehner, Markstrom, Vasilevsky probably. Off the top of my head anyway.

If the goal is to get younger... they have little choice but to move Edler. He is one of a few chips they have that can get something in return and not hurt the team too much.

I mean, we already have other inconsistent underachievers. We can afford to move him.

Again, I'm not saying that he shouldn't get moved(I'd like to see him moved for a top 6 forward with a cheaper cap hit that's around the same age or younger). Just saying that Gillis may not feel the same way and even if he does, he might not find the right deal.

BOWNESS SIGNS IN TAMPA..... 2 people are thrilled. One just found a dollar in his sofa and the other is Bowness.

(Maybe he can influence a Luongo trade)

I'd cry. Seriously though, Raymond is a goner, apparently he there's been no discussions between his agent and the team. Lappy is likely gone as well. I'd say there's a 5% chance that Burrows gets moved.
