Its the closest to 2003 since 2003. I am hearing that the quality of players even in the 2nd round are going to be good too. Its a great draft. A top 5 pick for Edler...no way. He has talent and size but he has been way too inconsistent for a team to sacrifice a top 5 or top 10 pick for. He has good moments and then noticeable blunders like against the Sharks for example.

I have talked to scouts, and while they think it's going to be a good year, they have also told me that you can't compare it to '03 for another 3-4 years.

they knew '03 was a good year, but do you think any of them had Perry picked as a Hart winner or Weber as a Norris winner?

No, otherwise they would have been top 10 picks.

Fans with suggestions of trading up are pretty dumb period.

If you look at history, trading up generally doesn't land you a player that is any better than where you are picking.

Off the top of my head, Couture is the only one that comes to mind as being a real good move.

They suck though. Drafting Stefan and Brendl would have given us multiple lottery picks for years to come.

You can't state that like it's a fact until we really see how these players end of developing. And you hear things like this every draft IMO, and I've actually heard the opposite that suggested that the to end of this draft is amazing, but then after the first 7-10 picks it's not an amazing draft. If I'm a team like Carolina that could really use a d-man like Edler, has made a big splash with Staal and Semin and probably needs to make a playoff run to justify that spending to ownership, you can bet that I'd be listening to any package that includes Edler for my first.

Rutherford is not insane to add an above average D for his top 10 1st rounder. Karmanos isn't an idiot either.

The thing that is similar though is that this year as in 2003 the draft rankings were all over the place. Guys rated top 10 on one list are 25-30 on another. Speaks to the parity and depth in this draft.

Drop it Scoob. You won't get through to him. Everyone knows the Oilers have about 35 HOFers in their system right now and they are going to win 10 of the next 12 Cups.

Or at least that's what people on here keep telling me.

Maybe tomorrows blog will be WTF is wrong with fans when they'd rather hope on a player being good than know a player is good.

- IanEsplen

The Oilers will be a good team sooner than Van will get their cup. We're not gonna win that many cups but we will be a top tier team very soon. Our two teams are trending in very opposite directions. We have sucked for a long time and know it. You guys have got knocked out in the 1st round of the playoffs two years in a row and stiil have the swag like you've won the last 10 cups. This is why the rest of Canada cheers against you.

I'll have to look, but I believe that was more trading for an extra pick rather than trading up.

Well essentially you just confirmed what I said about it being a great draft. Obviously, you cant evaluate it until later but all arrows are pointing to this being a great draft. I didn't say it was on par with 2003 but that it was as close to it as drafts since than have been.

How can you say that with certainty and like it's 100% true? Scouts have been wrong many times before. How many scouts knew that the 1999 draft would (frank)ing suck outside of the Sedins?

Sure, but youre implying that Edler is the big fish...and really he is an above average fish. I am sure you can agree.

Yes he would be the most valuable asset in the package(to say that he should be the lesser part of the package for Carolina's pick means that you're overvaluing Carolina's pick IMO). The "+" could be a first round pick or a prospect or young player in the Canucks system, but certainly is not going to be something more valuable than Edler.

If its a 1st in the current draft, then it may have some merit then. But us talking of a deal and something actually transpiring are completely different things lol

It was a little bit of both if I remember right... and then a trade down from 1st to 2nd just to top it off.

You started off fine, but then went on to say "I didn't say it was on par with 2003 but that it was as close to it as drafts since than have been." Again, you're implying that's it's very likely without any evidence. If you had some facts like maybe the average junior point production of this year's class(top 30 or 50 players) compared to previous classes the maybe I could agree with you. But otherwise it's just an opinion since you have zero statistics to back it up. The only thing that I've seen all scouting sites/experts to agree on is that the top end of this draft is great, then after that I've seen some of them say it really drops off after a certain point while others believe that this draft will produce quality players well into the second round.

We'll likely have to agree to disagree.

Of course, I'm not one to try and come up with trades and start negotiating with other team's fans(It's pretty funny to me when people do that and are being 100% serious).

I'd still put money on Edler not getting moved at all.

Reminds me of the Raymond situation. Fans will be throwing him in every trade proposal and then everyone will be shocked that he isn't moved at all.
