Yes, and the Kings also received McSorley and Krushelnyski, who were both decent players in their own right.
The point is that when we're talking about cutting a cheque for 24 million dollars, we're talking about a hell of a lot more than than Ryan Strome.
The comparable is more like Toronto's next couple first rounders and Komisarek for DiPietro and Tavares.
We're out 22 million and two first rounders and we get a Hart Trophy nominee. - Leeman4Gilmour
yeah I realized the extras for Edmonton there after I posted.
In my opinion, the Isles are not forking over picks and players simply for getting rid of DiPietro. I think being willing to take on a contract like DiPietro's could be an asset for you guys though.
That being said, the NHL plays by its own contract rules. They vetoed the Kovy deal after accepting the similar Hossa and Luongo deals. Who's to say they will accept this proposed "cash transaction" and not nip that precedent in the bud? |

also this is a fun fact, both raycroft and justin pogge, who the leafs decided was going to be better than rask which is why they dealt him to boston, now ply their trade in italy. makes you wonder if it was the GM or the talent evaluators (scouts or whoever does that) who were to blame for that catastrophe - MetroidPrime
well pogge had amazing potential but it was all mental for him and he just couldn't figure it out and he doesn't have a losing record since being with the leafs |

Yeah 2 million = 24 million... you would think a guy whose franchise traded the best player in the history of the game in his prime for cash would understand the value of that much money... - jribout

I'm sorry guys but it's going to take a lot more then just Strome to convince MLSE into shelling out 25 million. |

just so we're clear...MLSE is essentially going to give the Islanders 25 million dollars in exchange for what?
Do you expect them to trade you Tavares? |

Exactly...Just because MLSE has deep pockets, doesn't mean they don't appreciate the value of 25 million dollars. Strome is a highly ranked prospect, but he's still a prospect. Plus what happens if he trips on a rake tomorrow and brakes his neck? 25 millions without 100% results is reckless and not the kind of decisions corporations like Rogers make |

It's for this reason (among many others) that I don't see it happening.
However, they're ability to buy out a smaller contract (off the top of my head Vinny for TB) might be a trading chip. |

No, I dont expect it to happen period.
Nonis - Hey guys, I want to make a trade for a pylon who I plan on buying out
MLSE - what do u mean?
Nonis - Well we get Dipietro from the Isles and buy him out, its only going to cost us $25 million and we get Strome in return
MLSE - Who the fk is Strome? and if u suggest that again youre fired. |

Just so we're clear, MLSE isnt going to just give away $25 for anything less then a bona fide superstar who will make them money. So yes it would take Tavares to get it done so it AINT happening!! |

O.K. I undersand. Pretty ballsy of a GM to ask that kind of expenditure out of someone I suppose.
I don't think the Isles fans respond too strongly to the idea that their team can be pillaged, and I don't think the league and other smaller teams care for the precedent it sets either. There's a lot of reasons to be skeptical of something like this. |

And it could be argued that the impact Tavares could have on the Islanders franchise over the course of his career would be upwards of 25 million anyway, so another reason it's not happening... |

I dont care how much money MLSE makes a year. No one is going to just throw away $25 million dollars, the notion is absolutely laughable, and to only expect a prospect in exchange? are u kidding me?

I'm sure there's a way to make this work but it will take a lot of players being moved both ways. Leafs will want to shed some contracts so Liles and Komi will both have to be in the deal and as to what would come back with Dipietro, I really have no idea. If it were Komi for Dipietro and Strome, MLSE would want to make that $25 mil back pretty quick and I dont think I want that as a Leaf fan. Imagine the implications, maybe they dont re-sign Kessel and/or Phaneuf, they dont add any salary this year so no ufa's, they might jack up ticket prices. This is MLSE we're talking about, we all know what they are capable of. |

I think the original proposal was to buy out DiPi's 36 million dollar contract (24 of which would be paid out) in exchange for Ryan Strome.
This would be one of the single largest cash transactions in all of North American pro sports. The only comparables would be those deals that get made in European soccer where Team A gets a player from Team B for tens of millions of dollars.
If MLSE is spending Gretzky money, they'll be expecting the 1988 version of Gretzky. Not Ryan Strome, as good as he makes some people's NHL13 rosters look. |
