Wouldn't that be something.

You would do an awesome job in such a role.

Has there ever been a coach, in any American major sport's league, that has been hired and succeeded with no coaching experience? There must be somebody. Or, would a Messier hire being blazing new trails?

I think this fella did:

Philosophically, it is not a hire that I would ever make. But, i'm with Jim on this, if its made, I'm 100% on the bandwagon.

Part of me wants someone other then messier so this board isn't a depression filled vent machine

Honestly I'd be just as happy with Eakins. I just want a fresh face/name. These recycled guys I feel like had their chance and already screwed up

It can be slowed down if Glen Sather starts to think logically. There is no need for the Rangers to throw a hail mary on this coaching hire. Absolutely, none.

it's true, the amount of candidates right now is seemingly endless

one good thing about firing Torts now is the amount of options there are, but if they wait too long, those guys could start disappearing

I wouldn't be depressed. I would be scared sh*tless, but not depressed. I would be intrigued, excited, and scared.

Agreed. Not yet.

This team is very close. We have the hard part down, the defense and the goalie.

We just need someone that can blend that with a good power play and a better offense. Its not much, but its a lot to ask of someone who hasn't coached before. Way to risky imo. I like AV.

All I can say is, when the Yankees hired joe torre the town was all in a huff. "Clueless joe" yada yada yada, I'm getting that same vibe from a messier hire. I just think it could be a brilliant stroke of genius

Thanks, but until the suits at TSN, ESPN or wherever arrive at that same conclusion you'll have to tolerate my "insights" on this board.

Just filed to @NewsdaySports: sources say #Isles captain Mark Streit will not return. Turned down team's best offer, will hit open market

I agree. If I hear/read that Messier is hired I will probably sigh deeply then acceptance will set in and I will just cross my fingers that it will work out.

It a freaking crap shoot for all of them. I think a Messier hire, with a well thought out pair of assistants can be an incredible lift for this team. Any sort of powerplay alone could lift this team in the standings and make them that much harder to play come playoff time.

Joe Torre was a player/manager with the Mets, a manager with the Braves and Cardinals before he got the job with the Yankees. Not really the same thing.

The only way I believe a Messier hire works is if they find a pair of veteran assistants to work with. I'm just not sure what Messier brings to the table that you can't find in another candidate aside from his reputation as a winner.

Magic Johnson flopped in the same type of situation but then again. Did Mark Jackson heave any real coaching experience before coaching at Golden State. I'm not an NBA guy so I am not sure.

I love the people who think that team is a goaltender away from the Cup, that D was suspect to begin with and now they let their captain and best defensmen leave? Also shows Wang is still unwilling to pay any money, their window is a open as their UFA's status

Correct, none, which is why many thought he would fail, but he did work as a broadcaster for a while.

It could be a brilliant stroke of genius, but it could also be the Titantic and the Hinderburg disaster all wrapped up into one.
