i'm not too sure torts would bring that style to pitt. he bases the style off the team he coaches. in tampa, he coached a team loaded with offensive talent with a motto "safe=death". when he came to the rangers, he created the shot blocking, dump and chase system because we had a lack of talent. i think the only reason he didn't change up the system this season was the lack of training camp. - rangerdanger94
He definitely played a more open game with TB but as you said he had a lot of offensive talent there. If he played a more open style similar his TB days with a little bit of a mixture of his defensive Rangers than he could make Pitt even more dangerous. He would have to adapt though to be successful in Pitt IMO.

I would have to think have the style torts plays would be interesting in Pittsburgh. The defensive break downs is what kept the islanders in that series. I feel like using torts` system would def hold back a lot of scoring inPitt, but they have SO MUCH firepower they can still win games. instead of scoring 5/6 a game it might be like 3/4. but with superstars like that on Pitt, its hard to imagine them blocking shots. Crosby already takes enough pucks to the head ( not trying to be a wiener), just being honest. - Dedshark
It would be interesting to see. I don't know if they would buy into it, especially with Crosby's head injuries. I would think Mario wants him out of the line of fire as much as possible. And if You don't want Crosby doing that kind of stuff, it starts with the captain. He has to lead the way in whatever system you are using, I'm not saying Crosby wouldn't do it, I'm sure he'd do whatever is necessary to win, I'm talking more ownership protecting their player and cash cow. They'd probably make Torts adjust his system more towards his Tampa days before giving him the job.
I'm still surprised the Rangers let him go., I figured he had at least half of next year with a full training camp. I know he was dooshy with the media and there were some things that needed to be adjusted like the power play and having the puck in the offensive zone some more but there were a lot of good things implemented as well by him. Behind the scenes he must have really been on the player's backs. |

No moral victories in professional sports but in 3 of the 4 losses to the Bruins, the Rangers had 3rd period leads. The lack of finish on the PP did the Rangers in. The new coach needs to find that balance and I think he will b/c the Rangers defensive talent is suprior to a lot of teams, to me its not even as much of a style change as much as it is improving the power play. |

Not enough defense eh? The Bruins are built for the playoffs, its the path the Rangers were taking but it isn't finished. There is no reason the Rangers still can't play a hard forechecking straight ahead style and spend time in the O-zone. Thats what wins in the playoffs, the Hawks for all of their skill grind as well as anyone. |

It's amazing with all the Penguins offense they can't muster a single thing offensively vs the Bruins.
I wanna hear Pierre yelling from his little perch between the benches at Blysma too
"There's no structure! Look at this! All the Penguins are freelancing!!! No team work! This is on the coaching!!!!" |

Last nights game really reminded me of the game right after the trade deadline. The Rangers dominated. Boston is a great team because they are strong but, more importantly, very consistent in all areas of the game.
I think the Rangers have a similar makeup but with very little consistency. It is imperative that there in not much roster turnover this summer to help breed that consistency.

Boston plays a punishing, intimidating style. Kings did last year. That's how you win in the playoffs. For the millionth time...We need to do that!! |

They aren't scoring goals right now so putting a zamboni in net isn't going to help them much either.... |

Rangers were perfect team, it was all Torts fault.
The Penguins are proving that with a wide open system with the offensive stars on their team allowed to be creative can beat the Bruins rather easily. |

But with every GA they get deflated. That 4th goal last night may have been a series killer. They just made it 3-1, feeling good going into the 2nd..but wait, MAF lets up the softest goal ever, never mind

the Penguins play a wide open system that allows their offensive players to create and doesn't stifle them.
They don't ask their players to sacrifice their bodies, block shots, none of that
and obviously, it's paying HUGE dividends so far |

So are we resigned to excusing everything that happened with this team in between opening the season and ending the season in Boston because Boston is up 2-0 on Pittsburgh? What's done is done and someone paid the price for their own problems |

Its all about balance. The Bruins have tremndous balance, they fight if they have and when they need to, they score when they have to, they scarifice their bodies when they have to, they win key draws, when they have to, they get good goaltending, they have tremendous depth, they execute their system better than anyone in the league. They play a defense first system and get their offense from that, so it is possible to win that way, the Bruins execute, part of it is bc they are more talented than people give them credit for...damn you maple leafs |

I don't think anyone is saying that, I think what we are saying is that things aren't as bleak going forward and this wide open style that Pittsburgh plays is being exposed by Boston who is a complete team that does everything well. The Rangers need a jolt in skill and approach but this series is a reminder that balance going forward is the key to Rangers success.... |

The worst thing Shero could have done was pick up Iginla and Morrow, the pressure intensified and the attitudes got lax, they are totally unprepared for the Bruins |

They've been taught defense first for 4 years, they are not going to forget how to play it because they will open it up a bit |

I think the Bruins are focused and locked in and have a tremendous chance to win another cup. The Hawks, the Kings and the Bruins have had no turnover from last year to this year and I think it shows...no doubt |
