Head not heart, head not heart here. If he struggles or proves incapable, could Sather let him go? - airjan23
He'll leave for medical reasons.
Look at him.... if you told me he was sick I would believe it. |

Now you don't have to resort to the 7 p.m. sports news to learn that the Rangers just hired Ted Nolan. |

TJ called me at work to let me know Torts was fired, one of the very few times I wasn't aware of big news first |

Put two old war horses with him that have been around the league, and know the mechanics of coaching -- maybe a couple of guys that have been head coaches, but don't have the ambition to do it again. He would really have to be supported by people that know what they are doing. - Pete V
Marc Crawford? Wasn't messier a player under him? |

Somebody make the case for me as to why Mark Messier would be a better hire than Dallas Eakins. - Pete V
I got one. Because Dallas Eakins is already the coach of the Vancouver Canucks.... |

And then Kreider would be so scared all he would do is backcheck, and his stat line would be 82 6 10 16 points +3 - Pete V
So you are saying Kreider won't be healthy scratched? |

can't see Renney coming back as an assistant - airjan23
Especially since it was reported Messier got him fired in Vancouver in favor of Keenan. |

Well ill try, but I will say I'd rather have Eakins over the recycled guys that we hear:
Messier has been through every single moment a hockey player will ever go through. And he's probably gone through it 50 times. Although messier has coached 0 games, one could argue that he's experienced more then any person in the history of the leauge. You can't tell me that won't help him in relating to players, teaching players, being there for players, etc. I swear it feels like people are referring to him as this bum who did nothing in his career. This is one of the greatest 2 way players in the history of sports, let alone hockey. His leadership and competitiveness are literally second to no one. The respect players would give him because of this is immeasurable. They will see a guy who was willing to do anything to win when he played and knowing that he's won 6 cups doing that, maybe just maybe that'll rub off on a Kreider ....a delzotto...a hagelin...whoever, and they will do those little things it takes. Messier knows what those little things are, does Eakins know? Does a few years as an AHL coach teach you everything you need to know to be a successful coach? Maybe. And I don't doubt that eakins could be a solid coach. But no can guarentee that he will, just like no one can guarentee messier will be terrible. It's all a crap shoot and I'm willing to bet messier will roll 7s
To dismiss messier being unable to do anything is foolish given is track record of past successes |

All you speak of happened while he was a player. Not one of them happened in any other role....not as an assistant coach, not as a coach of a minor league team, and hell, not even as a coach of a pee wee team. He coached a team in a tournament.
Part of the problem I really can see is him wanting these players to play up to his level, meaning the level he played as when he was one of the best two way forwards ever. He may not be as tolerant of mistakes, or know how to relate to guys who cannot raise their level to his expectations. I read somewhere that he gets extremely emotional watching games from a bar...can you imagine behind the bench?
Look, I could be way off base here. I love Messier, and the 94 Rangers were the most important team in my sports watching life. I miss those days...but, I do not think this can work. As a GM, as it seems that he has been in training for since 2009? YES. He has been learning how to run an organization, I assume, from one of the better GM's in the history of the league. I just do not think he should be behind the bench of the New York Rangers because of a nostalgia trip.
