A Luongo for Dipietro deal straight up is not going to happen.
Luongo is still a good goalie. Dipietro is a buy out and will never play a game again.

- woopstash

Islaners don't HAVE to make a move though, Van HAS to move Luongo.

value for Van is they save a few pennies on the buyout

How about Snow calls the Kings once they are done winning their 2nd cup and offer a 1st and mid to low level prospect to them for Jonathan Bernier... See if that draws any interest.

So you'd rather be saddled with basically the same contract for an AHL goalie? Think of it as a one year gamble. You could take Lou use him for the year see how it pans out then either buy him out next year or keep him. With goalie D, you have to buy him out this year , he's not going to play in the NHL ever again.
- StevenStiller

No one really knows what Wang's plans are. Maybe he buys out DP. If it's the money that's the issue for him, he has interests at the Brooklyn arena...particularly Ratner...with very deep pockets and huge interest in the Isles' success (Ratner's actually bidding on the Coliseum property now). But Wang does have a personal relationship with DP as well, so who knows what they can work out between them. Maybe DP "retires" and takes some other position within the organization for virtually the same salary.

Or maybe none of that happens. Point is, virtually no one correctly guesses what's on the Isles' mind. But the only given is how highly the organization rates (even overrates) its signed prospects. I really don't think they're going to hand away Nino or Strome especially, but even Nelson or any of the others for the privilege of being saddled with another endless goalie contract.

I guess I would have to ask about what the alternatives are. The Islanders are going in the right direction. A very good goalie could really help them.
- woopstash

absolutely. Bernier, Hiller, Halak, all better options than taking on another terrible contract. We have Poulin and Nilsson, both very young, both with promise. Probably best at the moment to not commit to the position for the next decade without seeing if one of them can play first, and signing someone who can to a short term deal or fairly inexpensive trade while we get to see the kids spelling him off and figure out what we have.

I can't hold out any more.

Vancouver would be taking a risk to do it because if they buyout DP then the Islanders are free and clear of DP. If Lou goes to NYI and doesn't playout the contract then Van is on the hook for some cap penalties.

likely, depending what the cost is it would be an interesting idea.

Well the Islanders need to make a move because isn't DP the only goalie they have under contract for next year.

Lou is still a really good goalie.

this is why I think Vancouver buys out Luongo this year and Gillis eats a big heaping plate of crow. If they trade Luongo anywhere this is a very real possibility down the road, and it may come when they can least afford to take a cap hit.

we have two prospects and could resign Nabby as a stop gap for another year, or really anyone else as a UFA in the same role. We don't HAVE to do anything drastic. Vancouver has to shed a crap ton of salary.

But Luongo's not the only goalie available. And like I said in a previous thread...while Nabby looked horrible in the Pitt series and I was all over him about that, I really have to rethink how much that was solely his fault after seeing Pitt chase a very good goalie in Anderson from the net twice in the Ottawa series. Maybe Pitt just makes a whole lot of goalies look really bad...

Don't know if I'd be that broken up if they just re-signed Nabby and went with him and Poulin again...giving Poulin a lot more starts to transition him to the NHL and see what he's got.

It's pretty simple: If the Islanders want to improve, they would take Luongo. If they want to stay the same or get worse, they don't. Luongo is a damn fine goalie still and would improve the Islanders.

Really? there's only one goalie available? And here I listed 3 different quick options that would fill the same hole. Guess you didn't read it.

Would you trade Marion Hossa for Ricky D? I didn't think so, Van won't trade Lu for RD either.

I wasn't aware Chicago had to make drastic salary cuts and declared they would be moving Hossa after benching him for a younger kid. My mistake.

I don't think anyone questions his skill now. It's the fact that he's 34 and is going to carry a cap hit of $5.33M until he's 43. That's the issue, that's why I wouldn't give you a single scrap of anything other than a straight up swap for DP. His buyout is far more attractive than Luongo's. I realize no VAN fan would ever agree to that. I'd take my chances elsewhere before I let Lu's contract handcuff this team years down the line.

Luongo is better than Hiller and Halak. The Isles would have to put together quite a package for Bernier, who hasn't proven much yet.

That's just short-sighted Milbury-speak. Improve the team now to screw them down the line. Look where that got us.

They have to move one of two good tenders, pretty simple IMO?

you canuck fans. You seem to think WE suggested this was a good trade, and got all insulted when we don't want Luongo. Let's examine this.

DP's buyout, 16 years at 1.5 mil cap hit. We have 30 mil in cap space, we can handle it. We're sure as hell not going to give up an asset to take back a similar situation that might be good for 3 years to leave us in the same spot, and give up whatever benefits we could have had from the assets you're expecting over the next 7-10 years.

We.do.not.want.Luongo.

we will take him to replace DP since the buyouts are similar, and we may benefit for 2-3 years. Snow is not building a team for 2-3 years or we would have made drastic moves before now. It's clear he's expecting this team to be competitive for a long time. No assets for you.

buyout luongo yourself and we'll both have buyouts. We might sign Luongo as a UFA after that, but it'll be a much shorter contract.

You have absolutely NO idea what they want nor do you have any say in the matter. It's just a discussion, stop pretending like you're in the know.

where did I say I had inside information? It is a discussion, you just don't like that we won't agree with you.

to clarify this just so you understand, I'm not saying Luongo sucks, he's a terrific goalie. If he was signed to a 2-3 year deal you'd get a heck of a lot for him. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
