This might have been said already....But would Luongo waive his NMC to go to Long island? Did not hear if they were on his short list of teams before the trade deadline.

At this point I think he'd go anywhere

we were not on the short list
we were not on the extended list
we were not on the revised list
we were not on the re-revised list

Then the Islanders won't get him. Pretty simple.
- woopstash

Then they won't get a 34 year old goaltender with nine years left on his deal at $5M per. Fine with me. I'd rather a younger option to grow with a young team than a guy in his mid 30's.

So you'd rather be saddled with basically the same contract for an AHL goalie? Think of it as a one year gamble. You could take Lou use him for the year see how it pans out then either buy him out next year or keep him. With goalie D, you have to buy him out this year , he's not going to play in the NHL ever again.
- StevenStiller

Or we could just have the owner buy RDP out this summer and go after a younger option in goal, one who can grow with the team. That way, we have no goaltender on a ridiculous 9-year contract as opponsed to one.

How about Snow calls the Kings once they are done winning their 2nd cup and offer a 1st and mid to low level prospect to them for Jonathan Bernier... See if that draws any interest.
- Bags502

Bingo. It may take a bit more than a mid-to-low level prospect in addition to the first rounder, but it'd be worth it. Much better option to get Bernier than to trade for Luongo.

I have a feelign you guys will sign Mike Smith.
Also wouldnt a far better idea would be to try and swing a trade with St. Louis for one of thier goalies. Jake Allen looks legit and should be tha back up, meaning Halak or Elliott could be moved.

Well the Islanders need to make a move because isn't DP the only goalie they have under contract for next year.

Lou is still a really good goalie.

- StevenStiller

Yes, but if he was worth the contract and the contract wasn't such an albatross, Why have the Canucks been trying to move him for the past year and why hasn't anyone else made a trade with Vancouver for Luongo? The goalie is good, the deal is awful. Luongo has about 3-4 more good years before he is a drastically overpaid backup for 4-5 years. No thanks.

It's pretty simple: If the Islanders want to improve, they would take Luongo. If they want to stay the same or get worse, they don't. Luongo is a damn fine goalie still and would improve the Islanders.
- woopstash

Its not that simple. Yes, Luongo is better now than who they have. But he's signed for 9 years. He will be a $5M cap hit for five years of declining play and likely a relegated back-up. How does that "improve" the Islanders beyond the next couple of seasons? It puts the isles in the shoes Vancouver is currently standing in. No thanks.

Which is why they won't buy DP out, YET. That said, I see no way, nor sense, in the team obtaining Luongo when better and more short term options will exist over the next couple of years. Hell, that free agent Luongo guy may be worth a look.

Your wasting your time lads. Van fans have tried this with Leafs fans and Panthers fans. They just do not understand it. You can tell them till they are blue in the face and they still won't get it. Don't waste your time/affort with them. Just agree with them with regards to Luo and things get easier.

yup, and Snow has shown (despite our often grumbling) that he's not in it to make a big short term splash. He's looking long term all the time and signing realistic contracts. The DP contract was all Charles Wang and since then Snow's successfully kept him away from that crap.

We have no contracts that prevent us from being competitive long term. Buying out DP is a minimal cap hit even if they didn't use the amnesty, it's only 1.5 (yes for 16 years, but we don't spend to the cap)

and just to put the final nail in the coffin, here's his actual salary vs his cap:

Year Base S. Bonus Misc. Cap Hit
2010-2011 10,000,000 - - 5,333,333
2011-2012 6,716,000 - - 5,333,333
2012-2013 3,930,146 - - 5,333,333
2013-2014 6,714,000 - - 5,333,333
2014-2015 6,714,000 - - 5,333,333
2015-2016 6,714,000 - - 5,333,333
2016-2017 6,714,000 - - 5,333,333
2017-2018 6,714,000 - - 5,333,333
2018-2019 3,382,000 - - 5,333,333
2019-2020 1,618,000 - - 5,333,333
2020-2021 1,000,000 - - 5,333,333
2021-2022 1,000,000 - - 5,333,333

our owner does not have a history of trading for players he has to pay MORE in actual dollars than their cap hit. He's not going to pay almost 7 mil a year in actual dollars when he could even keep dp in the ahl and pay him 4.5. This is a contract only a wealthy team that spends to the cap wants, not a team near the floor.

Personally, I think Halak would be an absolutely fine option and would cost a heck of a lot less in traded assets than Bernier, Miller, Luongo (at least according to Van. fans' demands) and all the other options that have been discussed here recently. Plus, his contract runs only for next season, so the Isles wouldn't be giving up on their own in-house options that aren't quite ready yet.

Maybe Poulin and Nilsson never become legit NHL goaltenders. That's a perfectly possible scenario. But we're not there yet, and trading the moon for some long-term option is the same as closing the book on them entirely. It'd be pretty foolish to give up quality forward prospects, plus jettison the goaltending prospects, and then see one of the goalies become a good starter somewhere else, with the Isles knowing they could have had that goalie and kept all their other prospects to boot.

The Isles have a number of holes to address still. They're not at the all-or-nothing phase just yet, so I don't see the pressing need to sell the farm for a do-or-die Cup run next season. Patience is paying off, and I'm comfortable with a little more of it. Not stagnation...I'd like to see them be proactive in addressing some of the holes...but I don't think they need to go crazy yet.

ps, if you think these suggestions are hilarious you should see the local canucks forums here in Vancouver.

suggestions like:

Luongo + for Strome, Martin, Nino and Dp (the + being Ballard, another cap dump)

unbelievably deluded. This is why I keep saying I want to see Gillis hold a press conference explaining why he had to buy out Luongo. This town's expectations for a return are sky high, because "the contract's not an issue"

rofl.

check this out, I'm howling

This is a rumour that's been bandied about for a while. Seeing Luongo and a + go for Neiderreitter (who is a throw in because he wants out), Martin and Strome with the caveat being they take and eat Dipietro's contract. Which in all honesty with Canatta and Lack in the system is not a bad thing as Schnieder would need a back up and the Wolves would need one as well. Meaning Dipietro would sit and suffer in the AHL for a few years until his buyout wasn;t so harsh, or get bought out immediately. I still prefer to see Gillis kicking the tires on Colorado myself. The end of the day result is that Snow has proven that he makes some SERIOUSLY bad trades and that Gillis could fleece the hell out of him if the promise was eating Dipietros contract

Luo conversations remind me of that commercial with the 'rate suckers' who get attached to someone's car like tapeworms....As soon as someone rumors Luo to a team, 12 Vancouver fans attach themselves to that teams messageboard until they finally get enough "no's" then they all slide off and take off running for the next team's car.

Islanders trade:

2013 1st Rd Pick (#15)
Calvin DeHaan

to

Los Angeles Kings:

Jonathan Bernier

Although adding DeHaan might be a slight overpayment... I want a young goalie (24 I think) to grow with this team and lead them. Even tho he hasnt played in the Playoffs, he has been there and has felt what its like to win the Cup.

Thoughts???

Nah I guess not but we don't need another Albatross contract on this team. Only good thing is anyone is an upgrade from DP. I just don't see Snow doing this at all for some reason
