trade schneider, keep Luongo, only other way to not be worried about it is to buy out Luongo.
- Isles_since_6

In my opinion, that's the only option, and it's a no brainer.

so you're going to trade edler and do what with Luongo? lol. You're going to be trying to fill a roster with about 5 mil and 7 spots. If you move Luongo without eating a huge chunk of salary you're getting nothing back.
- Isles_since_6

were gona trade schnieder and lu then sign mike smith

It's been suggested that Aquilini is not interested in buying out any contract, so the whole idea might just be moot......

We all know that booth and Ballard are good players, just not for AV. I say we keep them because their stock can't get any lower and dump them when they start playing the way they can......provided we can make some other moves to retain them like trading Lu or Edler. I know Edler had a bad year but I'm willing to bet more than a few GM's covet this guy.....

I don't get why Aqualini wouldn't want built in write-offs while acquiring top notch talent on an ELC in the process.

I think you're basing that argument on the recapture risk. I'm not convinced it's a done deal nor that we've heard the end of that one. If it is definitively, then I would agree.

One of the most amusing things I find about HB is how free so many people are with the whole "buy him out, it's chump change to (insert millionaire/billionaire owner)." These guys didn't get to where they are by throwing away money nor without having a healthy respect for its value.

I have no doubt Aquillini loathes the idea of flushing money down the toilet, but in this business with the way it's been constructed under the salary cap era, there are few advantages any team has over another. Money is one of those advantages however. I think if Gillis plays his cards right this team could have genuine opportunity to reload without losing anything talent-wise. After compliance buy-out are gone that opportunity diminishes and the prospect of a lengthy rebuild increases. The question then is: does Aquillini see enough value to his team?

It's not flushing money down the toilet when it can be written off. Think about it. He gets a $1.5 million dollar write off plus a contributing young stud on an ELC. That's good value compared with overpaying a UFA (which we can't afford anyways).

Not to mention this franchise is EXTREMELY profitable, and we'll be even more profitable when we're saving an extra $7 million this season thanks to the cap roll back.

It's hardly a tax write-off though. But I hear what you're saying.

Like I said, it really is a genuine opportunity to essentially buy our way back into contender status. If it's done right, of course.

FA raising ticket prices , it will be the paying fans who buyout the contracts

Yup. Lower cap, higher prices = big year for Canucks Sports & Entertainment. They BETTER look at all their options to put a championship product on the ice.

Didn't they jack up prices in the playoffs and buyers just didn't buy. I though the sellout streak was broken and in the playoffs no less?

I know they had issues selling so they offered them out at a 50% discount. Think that got them sold.

Reminds of the Seinfeld episode with Kramer and Jerry......

Jerry - "you don't know what a write off is do you?"

Kramer - "do you know what a write off is?"

Jerry - "no I don't"

Kramer - "well that's what they do, they write it off"

it would be the way to get Luongo off the Canucks books for good, but then the team doesn't get an asset. If you keep him you still have an open window to go after the cup and Schneider brings back the assets you need for depth up front. Buy out Ballard and Booth and you have some cap space.

The only problem with this is that Gillis would have to backpedal, and it almost looks like he's more concerned with his reputation than doing the smart thing to improve the team. He needs to eat some crow and put the best team he can on the ice. Moving Luongo gets you nothing back, buying him out makes Gillis look like an idiot.

how am I trolling? Because you don't like my opinion? Go back in the thread, where I said Gaunce was viewed as a good pick up during the draft broadcast. You don't get to pick and choose my opinions for me.

This is trolling.......you other comments were fine. Its your tone and assertion that Lu has no value wreaks of troll. Paint me sensitive, but we've had enough Luongo trolling in here over the years....

wait, so when I praise a canuck it's not trolling, but when I state the obvious, allow me to quote darren dreger below:

Finally, the prospect of a Canucks trade including Roberto Luongo for Nino Niedereitter was broached. Quote Dreger:

"The Vancouver Canucks are in such a pickle right now that if they can get [Nino] from the Islanders, then Mike Gillis should be a candidate for Executive of the Year...

There's so many managers around the game that continue to tell me if this drags into the offseason, which it will, that Gillis is going to have to pay to move Roberto Luongo...

Do you get a prospect that still has that level of potential for Roberto Luongo? I don't think you do unless you're giving up something else in return"

so saying something you don't like, which one of your own canucks fans agreed with, is trolling to you? Look above where I suggested trading schneider to get something of value and keeping Luongo and you'll see your own fellow fan saying buying Luongo out is the best option, yet I'm trolling.

Interesting. So when I said the Sedins get a bum rap that isn't deserved in the last set of comments for one of Ian's blogs, was that also trolling? or was it not because it was positive? Suck it up buttercup, the world isn't fair and all puppydogs and daisies.

That was to go see Mason Raymond Weise and Lapierre next year Nino Jensen Gaunce will attract new fans

Waiting for Fosco to say Gaunce won't make it and no promises on the other two.

They should have some new exciting players next year.
