Wonder what Gunner's thoughts are on this. Jagr retire his number here or no? I say he's one of the greatest all time but I can't retire a guys number who made such a public cry to get out of here. I know the team was going down the drain but that is something you do out of the public eye. Obviously it created hard feelings and is why it will never happen. He was a site to see though I'll give him credit. We as fans have been spoiled from the 90's to present.

Is Patrick Roy's number hanging from the rafters in Montreal?

Jagr is a no brainer yes from me.

Agree. He is one of the greatest players in the history of the NHL, and he did most of his damage in a Penguins' sweater. #68 should be up in the rafters with #66 and #21

Too many teams, he is a mercenary.
I don't think there is any way we raise his number.
#87 and #66 should be the only ones up there, #21 was a jump of the gun.

Funny thing is, pens would do a ceremony for Jagr but he probably wouldn't even show up

Jags was one of my favorite Penguins off all time (until he wore that Orange jersey), he deserves to be in the ring of honor and have a picture in the Penguins locker room but I just don't feel like a guy that has played for that many teams should have his number raised anywhere.

If you only look at the contributions when he was wearing a Pens sweater, the numbers he put up warrants his number being up there. He is the best European player in the history of the NHL, and in the top 10 of best ever, and the majority of his prime was played in Pittsburgh.

Its more than just numbers that get your number in the rafters. I loved Jagr he was one of my favorites off all time , but he didn't do himself any favors by the way he left here and the way he handled things with Lemieux last summer, using Mario's offer as leverage.

I agree with you while also agreeing with Bartley. I don't know that it'll happen but the numbers are there. Unfortunately his personal legacy is tarnished because of KHL, greed(being a mercenary at times) and lack of loyalty.

Heck of a player. All time great. Penguins people have stated that he is all about the money before. It appears he wants records too.

My problem is it's hard to forget all those years where Jagr was carrying this team when Mario was hurt or retired. If this team doesn't go bankrupt in the early 2000s, he probably spends his whole career as a Penguin. He is the 2nd best player ever to where a Penguins jersey. For me, the numbers outweigh all the personal garbage.

For now...

I hear what you're saying. There's going to be people that are for it. Plenty against too. If he had signed here and not Philly I'm sure this wouldn't even be much of a debate. The numbers are there. The jaded feeling isn't quite over for some though.
It's not like it has to happen tomorrow. I could see it happening down the road a bit(a few years after he's done).

The quintessential retired number in every arena guy. The no 99s rule speaks for itself unlike the no 42s rule in baseball.

I loved jagr as a penguin and I even chose to wear 68 rather than 66 when I played because jagr was my favorite player. I just don't see how they can retire his number. I don't have a problem with him playing for other teams its just the way that it went down with the trade and the possible return. If he would have felt with those situations better there would be no question but I think he's even over being a penguin because every time somebody says something about him being a penguin he just says it was a long time ago. I don't think he cares if his number is put up there in Pittsburgh and I don't think a person who wouldn't care should receive that honor.

If he wants it to happen he's going to have to start mending the relationship between himself an the organization especially Mario.

I think 66 should be retired everywhere too he was so talented and had a lot of success and has one of the greatest stories out there overcoming cancer and I relieve he is the only player in any of the four major sports to play a game while also being a member of the hall of fame.

I will not be surprised if, when he decides to hang 'em up, he signs a 1 day contract with Pittsburgh and retires a Penguin. If that happens, you'll see #68 in the rafters shortly after.

Jagr should be in the rafters... if its him thats stopping it so be it, he can be responsible for disregarding a team trying to honor probably the best generational hockey player of the last 20 years.

What about Nick Lidström he was much better at the end of his 20 years than jagr is now and I think he could still play and be a very good player.

Well you can look at it any type of way, Jagr was a force at the beginning and middle of his career, he plays forward, most d-men tend to peak at the end whereas forwards are on the decline near the end. Lidstrom would probably be suffering from the same thing Jagr is now and that is age. From 1992 to today no one had more of a consistent output than Jagr to me. Lidstrom was pretty amazing though, hard to compare his kind to a guy like Jagr.

Jagrs seasons with the caps could be characterized as a large disappointment I mean he was makin $11 mil per season an wasn't producing like he should or was with the pens but he did regain some of his form with the rangers. I think if he didnt have that lull with the caps I would agree with you but nick was always consistent and he was a great leader for one of the best organizations in sports.
