The Phaneuf crap is a media related thing that us Leaf fans can't get trapped into. He has zero time for them and it pisses them off so they play bullpoop. Value Phaneuf's contributions based on the success of the team not what you read.

There's no tough decision to make...What the hell would this team look like without DionP?
- Flyfreaky

They'd look like a non-playoff team. Phaneuf has his defensive lapses, but he's by far the best Dman the team has. And he's a pretty damn good dman.

I don't know about EVERY team.... I doubt he cracks Chicago's top paring. Keith and Seabrook are sick. There may be a few other teams out there.

Not sure if this site has ever been mentioned here, but http://hockeyanalysis.com/ focuses primarily on Leafs and Phaneuf has been statistically studied on some of the blog articles. Here are the ones this season that are either about him or mention him:

Seabrook has been burned badly by rookies these playoffs.

He played 12 minutes last game against Detroit.....

This is a classic case of Leafs fans seeing what they want to see.

You watch Dion all year so you see all his mistakes. How some people can't understand the increased role means increased errors?? It's like the shots. People that say Dions shot is erratic are out to lunch.

Uh no your powers of observation are useless. He misses more than anyone on Toronto because he shoots 3 times as much. His percentage is still good.

You obviously don't watch Seabrook play. Seeing highlights of other teams defenseman and then think what a stud without actually watching his errors night in night out will do that.

^^^ this is a classic case of a Leafs fan judging a player by a couple of games.

Seabrook is a top dman. A couple of games don't change that. Phaneuf got burned a few times these playoffs too, or did you forget that?

I think the point is that every d-man gets burned. Phaneuf just happens to be under a microscope with the highest magnification possible.

umm, no. He's arguing with me that Phaneuf would crack the top pairing on Chicago. He doesn't. Phaneuf is a top pairing dman on MOST teams in the league. But there are a few that he isn't. That's the truth.

No you clearly never watch Seabrook play. You make your judgment on literally nothing.

12 minutes in ice time. Imagine of that was Phaneuf. They'd have him on the first bus out.

great read and agree completely. He does dumb stuff. But he plays top minutes against other teams top lines often with varying defence partners and still manages to be one of the top scoring defencmen in the league. He does a lot well - it's just way to easy for the media (and us fans) to focus on the mistakes (more than once I have wished him ill will).

As for being the Captain or not - I don't think it matters. Maybe it takes some pressure off him if he isn't the C or maybe it takes away some of his swagger if you strip him of it. I think it is up to him if he wants it or not at this point. He carries himself well in the media, I haven't heard that he's a cancer in the locker room (like the reports out of Calgary claimed) and he doesn't take a shift off on the ice. By all accounts - he's doing it right.

Maybe he would maybe he wouldn't. But I find I hilarious that Seabrook is a god and Phaneuf is a bum despite Phaneuf playing
better these playoffs in a much larger role as the Captain of a lesser team under incredible pressure.

It's true but, should the Leafs continue to pay him $6.5M to fill that role, or are they better off recouping assets while they can get a premium? Perhaps the best route is to just let him walk in FA next season?

It's definitely not a question you can answer without knowing what they could get back from another team.
