Gaborik, Nash, and Richards is a 20 million plus mistake. You should feel lucky you got anything for that bum Gaborik, won't say the same for when you trade Richards for a bag of pucks.

they will be using amnesty buyout on Richards

like about 20 other teams will be doing with their bad contracts.

How are the Versteeg and Jovanovski deals working for you?

No kidding. Ppl rip the Rangers as if they're the only team that has a bad contract. I still think Richards has game & frankly, Tortorella has been behind a lot of good players' downfalls. He's a good short term fire & brimstone kind of coach, but I think he's worn out in NYC.

even if Richards was performing as expected, the reality is with the new CBA rules (cap re-capture) the Rangers really have no choice but to amnesty Richards.

They can't take the risk of still having him as a 6.67 million cap hit in 2020, especially with the way he has digressed so rapidly this season.

he'll sign somewhere else and contribute, the new CBA killed his chances of staying the minute it was ratified

If they could move Gomez & Roszival, they can move Richards (unlikely). I think he's been playing injured or has serious undisclosed family/personal matters. You don't just tank like that when you're that good.

they can't move him, and I don't think Richards would let them with his no movement clause

Richards is far better off financially by making the Rangers buy him out, getting that fat check and then choosing where he will play next than he is letting the Rangers choose where he plays next.

I wouldn't dismiss that though. Islanders make smart moves through waiver pickups, they could have a field day with amnesty casualties, lots of cap room.

I love how people come on here, like a bunch of hockey GODS, and spout off about horrible contracts and the Rangers. Like an Islander fan, who obviously has forgotten Alexei Yashin, and Rick DiPietro. Or the Florida fan, whose team has been horrible for years, except for a blip last season.

There were plenty of other teams who were in on Richards when he was a free agent, hence all the meetings he took before signing with the Rangers. No one expected his play to drop off like this, and if someone says they did, they are lying.

Maybe it is Torts...maybe it is time for a different voice in the room. Maybe Richards is having issues, away from the ice, that are affecting his play. Maybe he is hurt. Until the season is over, no one knows what is going on except for the Rangers, and Richards.

But, to say that Torts is keeping him out to keep him healthy for a buyout is just plain dumb. You think THAT guy cares about that crap? Heck no...he would be ecstatic is Richards started to play like he has in the past, meaning well. But, how long can you wait? Is Haley gonna be the answer tonight? Is Newbury? No, but he has no one else, less he throws some kid from the Whale in there.

In the end, we are probably losing the series. I won't say definitely, because you never know...but Richards is not the only person to blame here. He is just the easiest guy to smack until the series is over.

The Blues are in the market for a #1 center. Most players want to play for teams that are stacked with talent, as the Blues are. If he is bought out & is a FA come July 5, he'd be an idiot not to take a look at the Blues. Sure, Toronto/Chicago/Boston/whichever big market team will probably offer more than the Blues can, but if he cares about winning, STL is a good option.

If I wanted to win a Cup, I would certainly look at the Blues, but I don't think I would take much of a discount to play there. Don't the Blues have to spend a good chunk in raises to RFA's this summer? I didn't think they were going to be spenders, but then again, I don't really know,I don't follow the Blues.

Pietrangelo
Shattenkirk
Stewart

Those are the ones that seem likely to cost the most. Capgeek says they have 24 million to play with though.

That is a more than fair statement. Even if Sather said to torts,"Keep Richards healthy, I need to buy him out next month", torts would be like "(frank) that, if he gives us the best chance to win,I'm playing him". Unfortunately, this is simply Torts saying that Richards play is not giving the Rangers the best chance to win.
And as for the long term contract comments,I always thought the deals were kinda stupid and too risky but then again I don't cheer for the teams where Kovalchuk, Lecavailier, DiPietro, Hossa, Luongo, Carter,or Ovechkin play so I havent noticed the benefits..

This move is staggering.

I personally think it is an awful decision. This sets the table for the offseason - Torts fired, Richards bought out or both. But definitely not neither.

Berglund too. even still, a couple good ELC's to fill the holes, maybe move a veteran goalie and there is lot's of space.

Roy is too arrogant, self centered and cocky to be a good coach at the NHL level.

Unless the Rangers win tonight? and Richards is reinserted into game 5 and plays amazingly well. Then Torts is a genius.
